Charlotte Bobcats Observations: Larry Brown to Philly?

Charlotte Observer — (By Rick Bonnell, rbonnell@charlotteobserver.com) It was an odd experience at Bobcats coach Larry Brown's pregame media availability: The Philadelphia Inquirer had just reported 76ers coach Eddie Jordan would be fired by the end of the season, and Brown - the most successful coach in recent Sixers history - was asked to size up that team."They've had phenomenal drafts and they're in a good situation financially. I don't think they're very far away," Brown said. "I know what kind of owner (they) have, I know the fans are as good as any. I look at their roster and I see the chance for improvemen...

Why they're on a 4-game win streak

Inside the NBA | Charlotte Observer — Some thoughts on a four-game winning streak: -- This doesn't happen if Gerald Wallace doesn't speak up and that's not easy. Calling out your teammates takes courage. It's not like getting on some messaage board as "Bobfan225'' and griping about...

Osala recalled to replace Cole

Lord Stanley's Blog | News & Observer — WASHINGTON -- The Canes will have a foursome of Finns in the lineup tonight against the Caps. The Canes recalled forward Oskar Osala from Albany (AHL) today to replace Erik Cole, who fell ill Tuesday night. Coach Paul Maurice said Cole is suffering from flu-like symptoms, although it was not believed to be H1N1. He could return to Raleigh this afternoon. For Osala, as well as defenseman Brian Pothier, it should be a special night. Both came to the Canes last Wednesday in the trade with the Caps that sent Joe Corvo to Washington. Oslala, 22, spent much of the season with the Hershey Bear...

Pothier continues 'new adventure'

Lord Stanley's Blog | News & Observer — WASHINGTON -- For Brian Pothier, the last week has been little more than a blur. A week ago today, Pothier woke up as a member of the Washington Capitals. By mid-afternoon, the defenseman had been traded to the Hurricanes. A day later, he was wearing No. 5 and in the Canes' lineup against the Ottawa Senators at the RBC Center, then flying off to play the Florida Panthers and Atlanta Thrashers. Tonight, it comes back full swing, so to speak. He'll be back on the Verizon Center ice with the Caps, but looking to beat the Caps. "You're on a team, you're in a community, your kids are in...

Capitals 4, Canes 3 (OT)

Lord Stanley's Blog | News & Observer — WASHINGTON - The game had a slightly surreal feel to it. Before the opening faceoff, there was Scott Walker lined up next to Ray Whitney — Walker in a red Washington Capitals sweater, Whitney in Carolina Hurricanes white. Soon after the faceoff, there was Joe Corvo trying to chase down Eric Staal — Corvo No. 77 for the Caps, Staal controlling the puck for the Canes. A little more than a week ago, the four were together on the ice, trying to win games for the Hurricanes. A big trade day changed all that, creating new faces in the lineups and new rivals in the Southeast Division rivalry. But in ...

Rutherford: proposal 'step in right direction'

Lord Stanley's Blog | News & Observer — While some will say the NHL's general managers didn't take a strong enough stand on eliminating hits to the head this week, the Canes' Jim Rutherford said a proposal offered today is a "step in the right direction." The GMs, after video presentations and much discussion, after going through reams of information, recommended today that a rules change be made to curtail blindside hits to the head. The proposal read: "A lateral, back pressure or blindside hit to an opponent where the head is targeted and or the principal point of contact is not permitted. A violation of the ab...

  • Rocky McIntosh willing to make inside move in 3-4 Redskins Insider | Washington Post Washington did not pursue Karlos Dansby, and Larry Foote left without a contract after visiting the complex this week, so it would seem the team still has a big hole to fill at linebacker opposite London Fletcher. The Redskins appear to need another starting middle linebacker because they are in the process of transitioning from a base 4-3 defense to a 3-4 alignment. But there is an in-house answer, Rocky McIntosh said. "I can play inside," McIntosh said in a phone interview the other day. "I've played inside before. It's no big deal. I can play anywhere. I did it when Gregg [Williams] was her...

  • Derrick Mason brought back in Baltimore FFToolbox.com Suddenly, the AFC is the division of wide receiver duos. The Baltimore Ravens re-signed wideout Derrick Mason on Wednesday to a two-year, $8 million contract. Mason spent the past five seasons with the Ravens, never missing a game and representing the team's most trustworthy targets. Mason had wanted to play again for Baltimore all along, but said that he would only return to the game if he got a two-year deal. That's exactly what happened. Mason, 36, is a fossil compared to other solid wide receivers, but he is coming off his eighth 1,000-yard season, including his third in a row. He will te...
  • Harris: Bryant gets slight bump after joining Bengals ESPN Christopher Harris looks at the fantasy implications of Antonio Bryant signing with the Cincinnati Bengals.
  • Bengals sign Antonio Bryant FFToolbox.com The Cincinnati Bengals have a legit No. 2 wide receiver. Or maybe more like a second No. 1. The team signed former Tampa Bay wide receiver Antonio Bryant to a four-year, $28 million deal on Wednesday. With incentives, Bryant could earn as much as $29 million. Bryant had a breakout season in 2008 with more than 1,200 receiving yards, 83 catches and seven touchdowns. Lingering pain from offseason knee surgery and a rookie quarterback dragged down his 2009 numbers, but he was still seen as the top unrestricted free agent wideout this year. Miami and Washington were also rumored to be vying for Br...
