Kobe about to test knee again on the court

Locker Talk | Orange County Register — From Luke Walton’s summer update via Mike Trudell at Lakers.com is this nugget about Kobe Bryant’s rehabilitation from knee surgery: Bryant is recovering well and about to begin on-court basketball workouts to test the right knee. “I’ve seen Kobe at the gym the last couple weeks rehabbing his knee,” Walton said. “He’s itching to get back [...]Kobe about to test knee again on the court is a post from: Lakers blog

Frank Gansz, Jr. doesn't like new rule

UCLA Blog | ESPN Los Angeles — The opening kickoff Saturday--and all other kickoffs this season for that matter--will look a lot different than in the past thanks to an off-season decision by the NCAA to adopt the NFL policy banning wedge blocking. UCLA’s special teams coach Frank Gansz, Jr., is not too happy about it. A wedge is defined as more than two players lined up shoulder to shoulder in order to provide blocking for the return man. “To me it wasn’t very well thought out in doing it,” Gansz said. “It’s sort of a knee-jerk reaction.” The NCAA rules committee proposed the chang...

Mark Prior is a Texas Ranger

From the Dugout | Orange County Register — Mark Prior, who has been trying to work his way back to the big leagues via the independent-league Orange County Flyers, has been acquired by the Rangers, the Flyers announced. Prior will go to the Rangers’ Triple-A team in Oklahoma City, but that season ends in a week. Optimistically, then, Prior could be pitching in the [...]Mark Prior is a Texas Ranger is a post from: Angels blog

Report: Ducks' Selanne says 'this is my last season'

Orange County Register — This isn’t really news considering that he had one foot out the door most of the summer, but Teemu Selanne told a Finnish newspaper that this will be his final season.  An article in Helsingin Sanomat is mostly about Selanne’s post-hockey...

Five questions about ... the second-place A's

Orange County Register — It's all relative. With neither team capable of posing a credible threat to the first-place Texas Rangers, second place is all the Angels and A's have to fight over at this point. For the A's (a half-game up on the Angels heading into this weekend),...

Defensive Issues

Inside USC | Los Angeles Daily News — You could argue it was a first game. In Hawaii. And the Warriors ran a spread-out offense. A less charitable view would be that USC's defense showed some disturbing tendencies that were peculiar to last season, especially in the Stanford...

Betting site favors Miami Heat, over the Lakers, to win 2011 NBA title

Lakers Blog | Los Angeles Times — Bodog.com has released its odds on who will win the 2011 NBA championship, and the star-studded Miami Heat, with LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh, are their favorite to win it all, at 7-4 odds. The Lakers, who are going for a three-peat (it would be Coach Phil Jackson’s fourth career three-peat), is the second favorite to win next June, at 11-4. They're followed by the Orlando Magic (11-1), the Boston Celtics (12-1) and the Chicago Bulls (15-1). The youthful Oklahoma City Thunder, Dallas Mavericks and Denver Nuggets follow at 18-1. By the way, the Clippers are listed at...

Examining the Pac-10 football weekend

Orange County Register — It won't become the SEC or the Big Ten overnight. It can't yet rival the Big 12. It's closing in on the ACC and the Big East. And with several challenging contests in this opening weekend, the Pac-10 has a valuable opportunity to raise its national...

Dodgers' Web musings: Thoughts now turn to next season and the need for a major bat

Dodgers Blog | Los Angeles Times — Things are so bad for the Dodgers these days -- hey, I’m not even talking divorce court -- they’re almost as far out of the wild-card race (eight games) as the division lead (nine). They are down and not getting up. Further evidence for the bleeding-blue faithful is offered by SI.com’s Tom Verducci, who wrote that since the formation of the eight-team playoff format, only one of baseball’s 112 teams made the postseason after starting Sept. 1 more than 3½ games out (the ’07 Rockies were five back). Which immediately turns the mind to … next season. And a pair...
