The joke's on Hall

Kent Somers' Cardinals Blog | Arizona Republic — Arizona Cardinals update: Heard a great anecdote this afternoon about a practical joke coaches played on rookie QB Max Hall Thursday night against the Redskins. Hall played well and when he left the game for good, he did a sideline interview with FOXAZ's Jody Jackson. Quarterbacks coach Chris Miller then told Hall to call upstairs to the coach's booth because passing game coordinator Mike Miller wanted to talk to him. The conversation, I was told, went something like this: Mike Miller: "Max, first of all, good job. You played well. But what do you think you're doing being interviewed on t...

Cardinals trade Wells, cut two LBs

Kent Somers' Cardinals Blog | Arizona Republic — The Cardinals traded starting right guard Reggie Wells to the Eagles Friday for an undisclosed draft pick. ESPN.com reported it will be a sixth-round pick. Wells played seven seasons for the Cardinals after being taken by the team in the sixth round in the 2003 draft. From South Park, Pa., Wells played at Clarion in Pennsylvania, so he will be close to home with the Eagles. The Cardinals had a glut of guards after the acquisition of Alan Faneca and Rex Hadnot in free agency. Wells played in 104 games, starting 90 of them. He moved from left guard to right this off-season, ...read the rest of ...

'Up the ante' becomes Coyotes' new mantra

Ice Chips | Arizona Republic — Phoenix Coyotes update:    A year ago, coach Dave Tippett came up with the perfect slogan for a team fighting for both respectability and a playoff spot.   “Pack mentality.”    He likes to move forward when it comes to mantras, and he has a new one for the 2010-11 season.   “Up the ante.”   Fans were thrilled a year ago when the Coyotes reached the playoffs for the first time since 2002, but Tippett did not view the season as a success. By “upping the ante," he’s imparting the message that merely advancing t...

ASU volleyball opens at home without libero Sarah Johnson

Jeff Metcalfe's ASU Blog | Arizona Republic — Arizona State volleyball will be without Pac-10 digs leader Sarah Johnson when it opens at home Friday. Johnson, a senior libero, suffered a fractured nose when she collided with outside hitter Sarah Reaves in a match Sunday. She is out until at least Monday and must wear a mask for the next 4-6 weeks. "It makes a huge difference," said ASU coach Jason Watson, who also could be facing a second possible injury scenario depending on test results. He will use freshman walk-on libero Jenny Teslevich to replace Johnson when ASU (1-2) plays Seattle University (2-1) at noon and San Die...

  • Butch Jones' UC era starts in Fresno Cincinnati Enquirer The UC Bearcats, who have won 18 straight regular-season games dating to 2008, are not likely to take Saturday' night's season opener for granted simply because Fresno State plays in the Western Athletic Conference, a non-BCS league, not after the way the Bulldogs pushed around the UC defense last year and nearly pulled off an upset in Cincinnati.
