Arsenal could bid for Swansea City's Ashley Williams as Thomas...

South Wales Evening Post — THOMAS Vermaelen could leave Arsenal this summer, paving the way for a possible bid from the Gunners for Swansea City's Ashley Williams. Arsenal captain Vermaelen spent the last two months of the season on the bench as Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny established themselves as Arsene Wenger's preferred centre-back partnership. The 27-year-old is reportedly keen to stay in North London and fight for his place in the team, but fears his chances of playing for Belgium at next summer's World...

Arsenal Man of the Match: Laurent Koscielny

The Short Fuse — You all had to know who this was going to be. We didn't even really vote, like we usually do. Someone - maybe me, but I don't remember - just said "MOTM is Kos, right?" Nobody really responded, because it was so clearly obvious. The clear primary reason is that for the second year running, he scored the game-winning goal in the match that secured Champions League football for Arsenal for the next year. He did it to West Brom last year, and again to Newcastle this year with a ridiculous scissor-kick that hit goalkeeper and Canadian prime minister Steve Harper in the side of the head on ...

Newcastle 0 - 1 Arsenal: Instant Reaction: YES!!!

The Short Fuse — Arsenal pulled out a squeaker at St. James Park in Newcastle today, winning 1-0 in a tense affair to finish fourth, one point above Tottenham Hotspur (again). Some thoughts: -- Arsenal were not at their best. Do not care. -- Arsenal sat very deep after their opener. Scary it was. Do not care. -- Laurent Koscielny was excellent; Per was less so; Ramsey struggled. He is my lovely Franco-Polish Man. Care. -- Theo hit the post late. I almost died. Do not care. -- Bale scored a worldie. Honestly who cares at all. I don't care much about how much this morning sucked to watch; it was tense, i...

The Independent — At the final whistle, Arsene Wenger turned towards his bench with both fists in the air and instinctively hugged the nearest man in an Arsenal jersey, which happened to be Mikel Arteta. This was what fourth place meant to Arsenal so forgive them if it got a little emotional.

West Bromwich Albion 1 - 2 Arsenal: Instant Reaction

The Short Fuse — Arsenal managed to hold on after going down to ten men against a rejuvenated West Bromwich Albion in the second half. Some observations: - Why were Arsenal still playing a high line? It was very easy for Shane Long to spring the offside trap that Arsenal were sloppily playing a high line. Laurent Koscielny played Long onside and Per Mertesacker had no choice but to bring him down. - The sun is a hilarious thing. So many miskicks and screw-ups today because the sun was in everyone's eyes. I hate the sun. - Tomas Rosicky is my favorite. I just like him a lot, okay? Okay. He was great tod...

Why has Arsenal's defense improved?

The Short Fuse — Arsenal have now kept two pretty solid-looking clean sheets in a row against two teams that are by no means slouches in the attack: Bayern Munich and Swansea. We liked the defending against Bayern enough here, in fact, that we gave the highly prestigious Man of the Match award to Laurent Koscielny, this only a couple of weeks after the Arsenal defense was destroyed, picked over, and analyzed nearly to death by everyone. Other than just "trying harder", though, had the team done anything out of the ordinary? Turns out, they had. After the victory in Wales, Mertesacker revealed that in ...

Arsenal Man of the Match: Laurent Koscielny

The Short FuseLaurent Koscielny was Arsenal's best centre back last season; a constant starter who sometimes single-handedly kept Arsenal from being a complete and utter disaster defensively last season. He's probably Arsenal's best centre back, but has had his playing time limited this season because Thomas Vermaelen has been fit all this season, and is also Arsenal's captain. It's unfortunate, because Koscielny has all the attributes of Vermaelen, while being better, and less culpable to the constant mistakes that Vermaelen makes. He showed some of that against Bayern Munich in the first leg, whe...

Bayern Munich 0 Arsenal 2 (aggregate 3-3) Martin Samuel Match report: Olivier Giroud and Laurent Koscielny score but Arsene Wenger's men go out

Arsenal v Bayern: The Good, The Bad, The Ugly

The Short Fuse — So here we are, the day after the night before. It was as ugly as we all feared it would be yet hoped it would not be. I don't want to dwell on it too much, but let's Good Bad Ugly this mess, shall we? Good: While no Arsenal player was excellent, and most struggled to hit replacement level, Laurent Koscielny was at the very least trying not to suck. He kept it from being a 6-1 mauling with a few key tackles, and while it may be a case of "he sucked less than the rest of them", he looked like the Arsenal player who was most up for the game and who gave a damn. Also, Schweinsteiger's...
