The Busby Babe The Busby Babe continues with the fifteenth installment of our 2012-13 Manchester United player reviews. Next up is midfielder Michael Carrick. * Manchester United 2012-13 season review I'm going to be dividing each of the player reviews into three categories: 'what was expected' will be a brief and general explanation of what the expectations were for the player prior to the season's start, 'what we got' will typically be the section with the most depth as this will be the heart of the review, and 'what's next?' will be an examination of the player's future at United. What was expecte...
Manchester United June 13, 2013The Guardian Robin van Persie's headline quality made him supporters' player of the year, but team-mates' accolade is the one to take note ofOn Wednesday evening, Michael Carrick beat Robin van Persie to the Manchester United Players' Player of the Year award on a unanimous vote. To persuade each one of his team-mates to eschew the Dutchman, who made a flying start to his United career that featured 25 Premier League goals and a series of match-winning displays, points to a deep appreciation of Carrick's work. All looked at the 31-year-old's contribution to a campaign that ended in the club's 20th title and...

The Busby Babe In any title-winning campaign, there will be numerous key players that were major contributors to the success. Manchester United were no exception from this -- this is perhaps evident in the likes of David de Gea, Rio Ferdinand, Michael Carrick, and Robin van Persie all being named in the PFA team of the year. One could also make the argument that Rafael should have been involved too. In this title-winning campaign -- incredibly Sir Alex Ferguson's 13th in 26+ seasons -- there were two clear invaluable players: Carrick and van Persie. The choice for the club's player of the year clearl...
Manchester United May 15, 2013The Guardian The incoming manager will inherit a fine side, but there are issues to be resolved, and players to buy, before next seasonGoalkeeper and defenceSir Alex Ferguson's final season in charge of Manchester United started with a 1-0 defeat at Everton, when David Moyes used Marouane Fellaini high up the pitch against the makeshift centre-back Michael Carrick, taking advantage of United's lack of strength at centre-back. That's a poor reflection of United's defensive situation, however. Following too many concessions at the start of the campaign, United have kept 10 clean sheets in their past 18 leagu...

Arsenal April 26, 2013The Guardian • Arsenal manager rates midfielder as his Player of the Year• Calls for 'real players in the heart of the game' to be rewardedArsène Wenger believes Michael Carrick should pip Robin van Persie to the Player of the Year award, as he prepares to welcome back the latter to Arsenal for the first time as a Manchester United champion. The Arsenal manager likened the Van Persie move of last summer to a childless yet broody 39-year-old woman, chasing what she wanted before it was too late and it is fair to say that the striker has delivered in his debut season at Old Trafford.Van Persie's 24 league go...

Daily Mail England's lead could have been preserved if Roy Hodgson had made earlier substitutions, but at least Michael Carrick impressed.
Arsenal March 26, 2013
The Busby Babe Michael Carrick is a fine central-midfielder. In fact, on present form, he's arguably the best midfielder in the Premier League at the moment. He's also not the worst option as an emergency central-defender -- unless of course he's up against someone with the quality and physicality of Everton's Marouane Fellaini. With England's current dire situation at center-back -- only Chris Smalling, Joleon Lescott, Steven Taylor and Steven Caulker are currently available for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers -- manager Roy Hodgson is apparently considering using Carrick at center-back in the upc...

The Busby Babe Seven Manchester United players -- Rio Ferdinand, Chris Smalling, Michael Carrick, Tom Cleverley, Ashley Young, Wayne Rooney, and Welbeck -- have been called into the England squad for upcoming World Cup qualifiers against San Marino and Montenegro. The inclusion of former England and United captain Ferdinand is certainly the headline news after the defender has not been involved with the national team since June 2011. The 34-year-old has 81 caps and has presumably been called into the squad by manager Roy Hodgson because of 'footballing reasons'. The current central-defender situation...
