The Busby Babe — The Busby Babe continues with the fourth installment of our 2012-13 Manchester United player reviews. Next up is the versatile Phil Jones. * Manchester United 20|13 season review I'm going to be dividing each of the player reviews into three categories: 'what was expected' will be a brief and general explanation of what the expectations were for the player prior to the season's start, 'what we got' will typically be the section with the most depth as this will be the heart of the review, and 'what's next?' will be an examination of the player's future at United. What was expected The 2...

Post Match Reaction: Manchester United 1 - 2 Manchester City

The Busby Babe — The lead at the top of the Premier League has been cut to 12 points as City took the three points in the derby at Old Trafford. A match full of passion was decided in the second half. Phil Jones (Or perhaps a Vincent Kompany OG) cancelled out James Milner's powerful deflected shot only for Sergio Aguero to score the winner from the bench ten minutes from time. Overall it was quite a disappointing performance from Manchester United. The first ten minutes was open but City soon took control. United's defence stood firm however, Phil Jones particularly impressing, standing in for the inju...

Fab four find rhythm to raise Chelsea above cautious Manchester United

The Guardian — League leaders start with Phil Jones in central midfield and offer little to rival Chelsea's creative quartet led by Eden HazardIf Chelsea were deserved victors at the end of a concussive, occasionally toxic, increasingly open quarter-final replay, this was a victory that also emphasised the playing riches that remain beneath the hierarchical chaos that has lingered around the club. The prospect of a fifth FA Cup in seven years seems an unlikely garland to a season of poisonous upheaval; but there was a reminder at Stamford Bridge that this has also been a season leavened by some vibrant attac...

Manchester United 1-0 Reading FC

The Busby Babe — This storystream will contain pre-/in-/post- match coverage of Manchester United's Premier League clash with Reading FC at Old Trafford. After hints to the contrary, Sir Alex Ferguson was true to form, disclosing that neither Phil Jones's ankle nor Luis Nani's hamstring were feeling up to facing Reading at Old Trafford on Saturday. There were hints that Nani's hamstring injury that forced him off against Chelsea last week was not a serious one. However, it looks like things got worse for the unlucky winger, although it still fell under 'slight' for Sir Alex: "We will keep him out for...

The Busby Babe — In his weekly press conference and before the FA Cup Quater Final tie against Chelsea, Sir Alex Ferguson confirmed that Phil Jones will miss the game recovering from his ankle injury against Reading. Jones will be out for another week, likely making his comeback against the same team in the league, while Ryan Giggs will be rested. "Giggs won't play because he was the best player on the pitch on Tuesday. He's done his bit for us this week. Now we'll rest him and prepare him for next week." It's safe to say there are no arguments there. It's unlikely that Giggs was going to play in ...

Manchester United Team News for Real Madrid: Phil Jones ruled out

The Busby Babe — It's been speculated and now it's been confirmed by Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson: Phil Jones will be unavailable for tomorrow night's UEFA Champions League tie against Real Madrid because of an ankle injury sustained against Reading in a recent FA Cup clash. It's obviously unfortunate because of the tremendous job the energetic 20-year-old did in providing inside cover against the unstoppable Cristiano Ronaldo whenever the former United attacker drifted away from the left flank during the reverse leg at the Bernabeu. Without the Englishman, the Reds will be a different s...

What might Phil Jones' potential absence against Real Madrid mean for Manchester United?

The Busby Babe — When pondering how Manchester United might cope with Phil Jones' likely absence for the return UEFA Champions League knock-out tie leg with Real Madrid, the concern is basically how can Sir Alex Ferguson's side find an alternative way to contain Cristiano Ronaldo? Just to briefly recap, Jones has been instrumental since the new year -- from a right-sided central-midfield position -- in helping to contain influential attackers such as Tottenham's Gareth Bale, Everton's Marouane Fellaini, and Madrid's Cristiano Ronaldo. This hasn't necessarily been in strict man-marking roles as some hav...
