Morata believes Chelsea sent ‘good message to all the Premier League’ with Stoke City win

Morata believes Chelsea sent ‘good message to all the Premier League’ with Stoke City win

So far so good for Álvaro Morata, as he attempts to become the next great Chelsea striker, not just this season or next, but, as Antonio Conte prognosticated, for the next decade. Six goals in his first six Premier League games for Chelsea’s no.9 and involved directly in two more if we count his assists as well. That’s exactly the same as the man he’s replacing. Costa announced himself to the league with 8 goals in his first 6 games (and three yellow cards). We shouldn’t expect anyone to be able to maintain such stellar form, but thanks to Morata’s well-rounded game, he...
Batshuayi, Morata combine for first back-to-back hat-tricks in almost 20 years at Chelsea

Batshuayi, Morata combine for first back-to-back hat-tricks in almost 20 years at Chelsea

Except for the blip against Arsenal, Chelsea have been scoring in bunches lately. Six against Qarabag, five against Nottingham Forest, and four against Stoke City just yesterday. Those may not be the most illustrious of opponents, but the goals count just the same. An added statistical quirk is that a Chelsea player scored a hat-trick against both Forest and Stoke, with Michy Batshuayi accomplishing that feat on Wednesday and Álvaro Morata replying in kind (and with his feet nonetheless!) on Saturday. This seems an unlikely sequence, and I had assumed that something like this hasn’t...

‘Wearesterk!’ Stoke’s language barrier proves more difficult to circumvent than their defence

Stoke City 0 Chelsea 4 Saturday 23rd September 2017 15:00 “WEARESTERK!” No. I'm not speaking Flemish. In London, "we are Stoke" would constitute three words using actual English. In "Sterk" it's one. It took nigh on the entire match to translate that. In the News: Diegogate is finally at an end. I'm glad. I think everyone has got what they wanted, apart from the Red Swarm who are now without dramatic fodder at our expense. Costa has said he'll always have special affection for us, Conte has said that he won't forget that they won together. (I've gone all Queen Victoria and started...

Conte provides update on Courtois head injury, explains Alonso substitution

Antonio Conte was rightly pleased with Chelsea’s 4-0 win on Saturday over Stoke City, while acknowledging that the team “suffered” a fair bit in the first half — i.e. Stoke were better and we had to keep our composure (unlike against Burnley) to keep the scoreline as it was. Fortunately we did just that, and also had Álvaro Morata, and Morata couldn’t miss today. “Alvaro performed very well. He scored a hat-trick and for a striker this is very important, and don’t forget the last game it happened the same with Batshuayi. It means we create chances for our strikers. “I am...

Chelsea fans have found a new chant for their star summer signing Alvaro Morata, with the song also containing a dig at Spurs talisman Harry Kane. Stoke City 0-4 Chelsea, Premier League: Post-match reaction

WINNER WINNER MORATA HAT-TRICK DINNER Solid performance from Chelsea with a fairly impressive scoreline, with Chelsea scoring after 20 seconds and never really looking back from there. We expected Stoke to be weak at the back, and that is exactly what they were. They tried to outgun the Blues, but our finishing was clinical and theirs wasteful. Three points. Carefree. 4 shots on target (from 6), 4 goals. Stoke with 13 shots, only 2 on target, zero goals. Clean sheet for Courtois, who had a bit of a head/neck scare after landing awkwardly but seems none worse for the wear 3-4-3 switches...

Stoke City vs. Chelsea, Premier League: Half-time report

Contrary to our initial assumption, Stoke City did not change shape to a 4-2-3-1 due to their injury crisis but retained their 3-4-3 formation with a pair of full-backs, Erik Pieters and Glen Johnson playing as center-backs with Mame Biram Diouf and Ramadan Sobhi functioning as right and left-sided wing-backs respectively. The home side started the game playing a very high line, which was a rather bold move and led to Alvaro Morata latching on to Cesar Azpilicueta’s long ball from deep, and calmly slotting past Jack Butland for Chelsea’s opener after only two minutes played. However,...

Stoke City vs. Chelsea, Premier League: Three keys to the match for Antonio Conte

1. Hazard health, fitness Since Eden Hazard started midweek against Nottingham Forest, it would be safe to assume that he’s back to full fitness. But given that he played the full game (the only first-team regular other than Gary Cahill to do so), should he start alongside Alvaro Morata and either Pedro or Willian in Chelsea's attack, with two tougher games on tap in the next seven days? “I’m pleased for Eden because in the last game he played very well. He played with great intensity. Now he has overcome his injury and we have to play three games so, yes, there is the possibility...

Stoke City vs. Chelsea, Premier League: Time, TV schedule, live stream, preview

Chelsea look for a third successive away victory Chelsea’s last visit to Stoke was one of the emotional highs of last season as Gary Cahill scored a near-last minute winner after giving away the penalty for a first-half equalizer to one-time Chelsea legend Jonny Walters. Walters has probably balanced out his cosmic karma from that two-own goal (and a missed penalty)-game with Burnley’s 3-2 win at Stamford Bridge earlier this season. But back to Stoke, who have yet to win in four tries away from the Britannia (or whatever betting company it’s sponsored by at the minute) but have yet...
