Aaron Judge finishes second in 2017 AL MVP voting

Alas, Aaron Judge did not become only the third player in history to win Rookie of the Year and MVP in the same season. Astros second baseman Jose Altuve was predictably named the 2017 AL Most Valuable Player by MLB and the BBWAA on Thursday night. Congrats to him. Judge finished second in the voting […] The post Aaron Judge finishes second in 2017 AL MVP voting appeared first on River Avenue Blues.

TuesdoLinks: No Rookie Mistakes

Aaron Judge and Cody Bellinger launch the Goldne Award Week results. The BBWAA announced the first major awards of the week, Rookies of the Year. Zero surprise, with Aaron Judge (AL) and Cody Bellinger (NL) being so honored. Like, duh. (Seriously, I wrote that sentence at about noon yesterday.) Out here as Outsiders of the Future, the Internet Baseball Writers Association announced yesterday the same finding, that Judge and Bellinger were the Rookies of the Year, both in a landslide. Oh, and also, the overall IBWAA results also agreed with me on Relievers of the Year, something the BBWAA...

Yankees’ Aaron Judge, Dodgers’ Cody Bellinger named Rookies of Year

The only major question was whether it would be unanimous — and it was. Aaron Judge and Cody Bellinger were named baseball’s Rookies of the Year on Monday after their record-setting home run binges eliminated any reasonable competition for the honors. Judge led the American League with 52 homers, the most ever by a rookie. Bellinger hit 39 and had to settle for the National League’s rookie record. Judge and Bellinger received every first-place vote available from the Baseball Writers’ Association of America. Judge became the first Yankees player to...

Aaron Judge unanimously named 2017 AL Rookie of the Year

In the least surprising news ever, Aaron Judge was named the 2017 American League Rookie of the Year tonight. It was unanimous. Judge received all 30 first place votes. Andrew Benintendi finished second and Trey Mancini finished third. The full voting results are available at the BBWAA’s site. Judge is the first Yankee to be […] The post Aaron Judge unanimously named 2017 AL Rookie of the Year appeared first on River Avenue Blues.

Judge named finalist for MVP and Rookie of the Year, Severino for Cy Young

Earlier this evening MLB and the BBWAA announced three finalists for each of the major 2017 awards, and, as expected, Aaron Judge is a finalist for both AL MVP and AL Rookie of the Year. Luis Severino is a finalist for AL Cy Young as well. That is pretty damn awesome. Here are all the […] The post Judge named finalist for MVP and Rookie of the Year, Severino for Cy Young appeared first on River Avenue Blues.

Orioles' Trey Mancini named finalist for AL Rookie of the Year

Orioles outfielder-first baseman Trey Mancini was named one of three finalists for this year’s American League Rookie of the Year Award on Tuesday night. While it’s likely a forgone conclusion that Yankees right fielder Aaron Judge will win the award, the recognition Mancini receives by being a...

The Good, the Bad, and the Injuries of Greg Bird [2017 Season Review]

Down the road, when we look back at this 2017 season, we’ll remember it for the young players who emerged to make the Yankees more competitive than pretty much everyone expected. Aaron Judge broke the rookie home run record. Gary Sanchez missed a month and still led all catchers in homers. Luis Severino pitched well […] The post The Good, the Bad, and the Injuries of Greg Bird [2017 Season Review] appeared first on River Avenue Blues.

Aaron Judge’s normal person-sized strike zone

Earlier today we kicked off our 2017 Season Review series with the amazingly awesome Aaron Judge. Judge will win AL Rookie of the Year in a landslide and he should finish high up in the AL MVP voting. He might even win! I doubt it though. Jose Altuve seems to have a leg up, but […] The post Aaron Judge’s normal person-sized strike zone appeared first on River Avenue Blues.

All Rise for the Best Power-Hitting Rookie in Baseball History [2017 Season Review]

Looking back on it now, it seems sorta silly Aaron Judge had to compete for the right field job in Spring Training. He went into camp having to beat out Aaron Hicks for the starting right field job, and given his strikeout filled MLB debut last year, it wasn’t unreasonable. The Yankees wanted Judge to […] The post All Rise for the Best Power-Hitting Rookie in Baseball History [2017 Season Review] appeared first on River Avenue Blues.

Gardner and Judge named 2017 Gold Glove finalists

Once again, Brett Gardner is one of three finalists for the AL Gold Glove award in left field. MLB and Rawlings announced the Gold Glove finalists today, and in addition to Gardner, Aaron Judge is a finalist in right field as well. Neat. Here are all the Gold Glove finalists. Gardner won his first Gold […] The post Gardner and Judge named 2017 Gold Glove finalists appeared first on River Avenue Blues.

Wednesday Night Open Thread

Couple of upcoming offseason items. One, the Hank Aaron Award winners will be announced later tonight. It is given to the top hitter in each league, and I imagine Aaron Judge has a pretty good chance to win it. And two, the Gold Glove finalists will be announced tomorrow. I have to think Brett Gardner […] The post Wednesday Night Open Thread appeared first on River Avenue Blues.

Youthful Yankees are already ‘excited for next year’

One of them is 25, at the start of what the Yankees hope is a long stay in The Bronx spent launching monster home runs. The other is 37 and on the back nine of what is today a borderline Hall of Fame career that still has legs. Together, Aaron Judge and CC Sabathia believe...
