View from the Catwalk: Rays fall out of first place

Following their series loss, the Rays are a half game out of first place The Tampa Bay Rays fell yesterday afternoon, thanks to a bullpen implosion as the trio of Adam Kolarek, Chaz Roe, and Colin Poche teamed up to surrender four runs in the eighth inning, to allow the Oakland Athletics to take a 6-2 lead and eventual victory. Kolarek allowed a leadoff single, Roe managed a strikeout but walked two hitters, and then Poche yielded the grand slam that sealed the Rays fate. Offensively, the Rays hit the ball hard but had little to show for it. Yandy Diaz had the lone extra base hit, a 7th...

The untidy outing started a bit of grumbling in the DRaysBay masthead slack, including from one writer, who shall remain nameless, who griped, “Are we done thinking Kolarek is interesting?” That was a poke at me. In the spring, I wrote about how interesting Kolarek’s...

Marc Topkin's takeaways from Wednesday's Rays game against Blue Jays

• Chaz Roe and Adam Kolarek have had bouts of inconsistency this year. But both came up big in the seventh, with the tying run on. Roe spun one of his sliders to get Vlad Guerrero Jr. looking at strike three, and lefty Kolarek did the same to Eric Sogard.• Tampa
