Batting sixth fuels power surge by Alejandro De Aza

DENVER — Alejandro De Aza enjoys hitting home runs as much as the next guy. Perhaps the best thing about the left fielder’s early power surge — he hit three in the season-opening series against the Minnesota Twins — is that it won’t trick him into thinking he’s something he’s not. “If I think like a home-run hitter, I might try to pull a ball that I should hit the other way,’’ said De Aza, who hit a career-high 17 last season. “Hit the ball...

Alejandro De Aza making plenty of noise with two home runs

For much of the offseason, White Sox outfielder Alejandro De Aza didn’t know if he still had a future with the team. The acquisition of Adam Eaton — a young center fielder with leadoff skills — Dec. 10 made De Aza seem like the odd man out in an outfield that included budding star Avisail Garcia and Dayan Viciedo. But De Aza was in the starting lineup Monday and turned out to be the hitting star in the Sox’ 5-3 victory with his first career multihomer game,...

De Aza strikes first in LF battle

CHICAGO – Perhaps the Chicago White Sox won’t have much of a left-field platoon after all following the first ever multi-home-run game of Alejandro De Aza's career. De Aza not only earned the start after a solid spring training, the left-handed hitter also got the call since the Minnesota Twins had right-hander Ricky Nolasco on the mound. The right-handed hitting Dayan Viciedo could only sit and watch Monday's 5-3 White Sox victory, and he might want to get comfortable to that spot on the bench.

White Sox 5, Twins 3: Renovated offense supports classic Chris Sale

Alejandro De Aza drives attack with two homers in Opening Day victory There was nothing novel about Chris Sale's game, thank goodness, but the White Sox lineup offered him a different look. With their powers combined, they got the season off on the good foot. Sale threw 7⅓ pretty easy innings -- very easy, if you remove Kurt Suzuki from the equation -- for his second Opening Day win in as many tries. He did give up a two-run single to Suzuki a half-inning after Alejandro De Aza gave him a two-run homer in the bottom of the second, but the Sox turned a page by giving him another two-run...

De Aza, Sale lead White Sox to Opening Day win

Alejandro De Aza belted two home runs, Chris Sale pitched 7 1/3 solid innings and the White Sox got off to a clean start to the 2014 season with a 5-3 victory over the Minnesota Twins on Monday afternoon at U.S. Cellular Field. De Aza, who started in left field over Dayan Viciedo, became the first Sox to hit two home runs on Opening Day since Minnie Minoso in 1960 against the Kansas City Athletics. He hit a two-run homer against Twins right-hander Ricky Nolasco his...

Rapid Reaction: White Sox 5, Twins 3

CHICAGO -- The Chicago White Sox built an early lead and then held on for a 5-3 Opening Day victory Monday against the Minnesota Twins. How it happened: The new-look White Sox offense had a solid debut, creating multiple scoring chances and getting some big hits when they needed them. It’s only one game, but new leadoff man Adam Eaton and new cleanup man Jose Abreu each had hits in their first two at-bats. Alejandro De Aza, who lost his starting center field spot, reemerged in left field and hit a pair of home runs.
