Soriano not sure what happened after ’08

NEW YORK — Alfonso Soriano misses the city and his old friends. But there’s little about the way the last few years of scaled-down baseball went that he misses from his nearly seven years as a Cub. “Yeah, that’s the worst part of Chicago,” he said of the deconstructed rosters and constant losing that prompted him to use mind tricks to convince himself the team could contend. “At my age, I just want to win. I don’t want to be a part of the future. I...

Soriano happy to be playing for the present

NEW YORK -- Although it took some maneuvering at the time, former Chicago Cubs slugger Alfonso Soriano agreed to a trade to the New York Yankees in part because the Cubs were rebuilding. He saw the writing on the wall and decided, at 38 years old that a move was the right thing to do. "At my age I want to win," he said before playing the Cubs in a doubleheader on Wednesday. "I don't want to be part of the future, I want to be part of the present.

With the Chicago Cubs in the visitor’s dugout for Wednesday’s chilly doubleheader, Yankees designated hitter Alfonso Soriano had the chance to reflect on his nearly seven-year stay in the Windy City.

Former Cubs teammates are eager to say hi to Alfonso Soriano

NEW YORK — A lot of these Cubs in New York for this two-game interleague series with the Yankees have never played in the Bronx, much less the new, sixth-year Yankee Stadium. But almost everywhere they look Tuesday and Wednesday, they will see reminders of what they might have been — and used to be. From the free-agent pitcher they committed an offseason to chasing, without getting him. To the manager the business-side execs claimed they could land, without...

Alfonso Soriano continues to heat up

It's probably fair to say Alfonso Soriano has snapped out of his early-season funk.

Soriano, Suzuki, Betances shine in loss

NEW YORK -- The Yankees are off to a slow start in the home run department, but they did hit one Friday night. Alfonso Soriano smacked his second of the season, leading off the bottom of the second inning against Jon Lester. It gave the Yankees a 1-0 lead, before CC Sabathia gave up a pair of long balls in the sixth, the difference in a 4-2 Red Sox victory. Soriano finished 2-for-4 on the night -- striking out in the fourth, grounding out in the sixth, and slapping a single to right field in the eighth.

Postgame notes: Solarte soars early

NEW YORK -- Some day, there's going to be another guy with six doubles in the first seven major-league games he plays. And someone's going to do some research and come up with the name of Yangervis Solarte. He might be as much of an unknown then as he was a week ago. He may be just another career minor leaguer who came up and had a great week in April but was forgotten by June. At least he's had this week. "He's living his dream," teammate Alfonso Soriano said Tuesday.
