Lightly used Recker twice delivers

ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Anthony Recker twice produced heroics in the Mets' 7-6, 13-inning win against the Los Angeles Angels on Saturday night. First, Recker delivered a go-ahead two-run single in the seventh. Then, after Jose Valverde had blown a save, Recker delivered again in the 13th, with a game-deciding solo homer against Matt Shoemaker. Recker entered the game with only five plate appearances on the season, as Terry Collins primarily uses Travis d'Arnaud behind the plate.

Anthony Recker's homer in 13th gives Mets 7-6 victory

Throughout his fresh start with the Mets, Jose Valverde has insisted that the past is the past. Two years later, he can't do anything about the epic postseason meltdown that sent his career careening off course. So he must focus only on the moment.

TC: d'Arnaud-Recker usage unscripted

NEW YORK -- Terry Collins indicated he does not have an already scripted strategy for how much Travis d'Arnaud and Anthony Recker will start behind the plate early in the season. Recker makes his first 2014 start in Saturday's matinee after four straight starts by d'Arnaud. "I don't have any schedule written down as 60-40, 70-30," Collins said. "You guys are way more scientific than I am." D'Arnaud is hitless in 12 at-bats to open the season. Asked if there was concern about d'Arnaud's pysche, especially considering his offensive struggles last season as well, Collins said: "It certainly...

Cincy's Hamilton 'Met' his match in Recker

NEW YORK -- Late in the 2012 season, when Billy Hamilton was well on his way to setting a minor-league single-season record with 155 steals, Anthony Recker twice thought he had caught Hamilton on the basepaths in the Double-A Southern League. Mets 7, Braves 6: Recker walks off

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. -- Zack Wheeler went to his offspeed pitches and found his groove after a shaky start, and the Mets ultimately beat the Atlanta Braves, 7-6, Thursday at Tradition Field on Anthony Recker's walk-off three run homer. Wheeler was pummeled in the first inning of what became a solid 75-pitch appearance over 5 1/3 innings. He allowed a game-opening triple to Jason Heyward, then a clean single to B.J. Upton. No. 3 hitter Justin Upton followed by smoking a shot to left-center, which Juan Lagares corralled at the wall with a highlight-reel leaping catch.
