NYY news: Estevan Florial draws Bernie Williams comp

Estevan Florial gets lofty praise; Masahiro Tanaka reacts to Opening day nod; Austin Romine wants to start someday New York Post | Kevin Kernan: Estevan Florial, the Yankees top prospect, has impressed in camp so far. The center fielder demonstrated in the early goings why the front office values him so highly. According to Willie Randolph, who has spent time at Yankees all spring, Florial has the same sort of vibes as Bernie Williams. There’s a long way to go, obviously, but it’s never a bad thing to land in the same company as Bernie. North Jersey | Pete Caldera: The Yankees named...

Tyler Wade’s glove can land him the Yankees’ final bench spot

Tyler Wade’s glove can land him the Yankees’ final bench spot

When it comes to the bench, it would seem the Yankees value defense more than offense, which means Tyler Wade is destined for the big leagues. Despite the fact we’re still three weeks away from Opening Day, it would appear things are about set as far as the Yankees’ bench is concerned. Just yesterday, Aaron Boone yet again confirmed that he will not carry two full-time first basemen on the 25-man roster, which points to Austin Romine, DJ LeMahieu, and Tyler Wade occupying the three bench spots. Romine and LeMahieu’s inclusions shouldn’t come as a surprise at all. Romine’s spot...

NYY vs. ATL: Luis Severino vs. Kyle Wright

NYY vs. ATL: Luis Severino vs. Kyle Wright

Severino makes his spring debut against the Braves. The last time we saw Luis Severino on the mound, he took a shellacking in Game Three of the ALDS. He lasted three innings, surrendering six runs on seven hits. You may remember that as the game that saw Austin Romine pitch in mop-up duty. Yuck. In the months since, Severino adjusted his training regimen, overhauled his diet, and signed a $40 million extension with the Yankees. In other words, he has a clean slate. The memories of the downward spiraling second half and postseason are just that - memories. He gets to turn the page, to...

The Yankees could do with some new blood for the backup catcher job

The Yankees could do with some new blood for the backup catcher job

Kyle Higashioka is probably a better candidate than Austin Romine at this point. Austin Romine has been the Yankees’ backup catcher for quite some time now, first appearing in the majors way back in 2011. He’s been a steady presence, but as his career 64 wRC+ and -2 DRS (at catcher) suggest, he hasn’t actually done anything performance-wise to justify his long tenure. Meanwhile, the Yankees have another candidate for the second-string catcher role in Kyle Higashioka, who looks somewhat more promising. In terms of ability, it’s past time for Higgy to have his chance at the job....
