Melvin Upton Jr. eager to help Blue Jays win championship

Upton’s round-about return to the American League East and a role on a potential post-season contender has been equally circuitous as his post-trade travels.

An ode to Melvin Upton Jr.

Remembering BJ’s best moments as a Padre. A little over a year ago, A.J. Preller wrapped up his whirlwind offseason by bringing Craig Kimbrel to San Diego hours before the first game of the season. But he came with an albatross named Melvin Upton Jr. The Braves signed the elder Upton to a five-year $72 million contract in 2012 only to see a disastrous two seasons in Atlanta. So they sent him packing, and he started last year on San Diego’s disabled list while is brother opened the season in left field for the Padres. If you’d asked me then which Upton I’d be saddest to see leave,...

Melvin Upton Jr. deal may be in the works with Orioles for Ubaldo Jimenez and prospect

So if I understand Padres GM A.J. Preller’s plan, he’s going to trade, the revenant, Melvin Upton Jr. to the Orioles for the struggling Ubaldo Jimenez. This plan will give the Padres a bit of a cost savings over the length of their contracts. I’ll have to go back and check but I think it’s about a $4-5M difference. By doing this the Padres will also clear a spot in the outfield for future star [fingers crossed] Hunter Renfroe to play the second half of the season. Also, since Upton is so much better than Jimenez, Preller will be wanting a top prospect too. If all goes well this...

Padres Preview: 07/22 Friars move on to D.C and try to end losing streak

After getting swept in a four-game set against the Cardinals, the Padres will try to get back in the win column this evening as they continue their road trip in D.C.  Luis Perdomo will get the start in the series opener against Tanner Roark and the Nationals. Perdomo only lasted 4 2/3 innings in his last start, allowing three earned runs on eight hits, including a home run, against the Giants. But since becoming a regular starter for San Diego, he's lowered his ERA by more than two runs. This will be his first career outing against the Nationals. Roark, on the other hand, has faced the...
