Red Sox notebook: Blake Swihart starts at first base

Subtitle: Cold Moreland gives youngster a shotSEATTLE — When the Red Sox let go of Hanley Ramirez, Alex Cora mentioned that Blake Swihart could serve in somewhat of a platoon role with Mitch Moreland at first base.On Saturday night, Swihart made just his second career start at first and went 0-for-2 with a strikeout in the Sox’ 1-0 loss to the Mariners.Moreland played too well to come out of the lineup for a while. And given Brock Holt has also snuck into the first base conversation, Swihart hasn’t had many opportunities to play it. But the manager wants him to get some reps.“We...

The Red Sox have to keep Blake Swihart around for the foreseeable future

The Red Sox have to keep Blake Swihart around for the foreseeable future

There aren’t any other viable options. The Red Sox entered last week with a six-game homestand against two rebuilding teams in the Tigers and the White Sox. They ended up with a disappointing 3-3 record at the end of that stretch, and while their pitching was phenomenal the offense struggled mightily without Mookie Betts. They (hopefully) won’t be without their star outfielder — nor without Dustin Pedroia — for too much longer, but this week did illustrate the real lack of depth at the bottom of this roster. Things shouldn’t stay quite as bad for many of the players involved here,...

Red Sox vs. White Sox lineup: J.D.’s back and will have his revenge

The slugger will look to help the Sox bounce back from a listless performance Friday night. The Red Sox (43-21) look to score some cot damn runs when they face the pesky White Sox (23-40) this afternoon at Fenway Park (4:05 p.m., NESN, MLBN out-of-market) behind David Price (6-4, 4.08 ERA). About today’s game: The up-and-down Price will face lefty Carlos Rodon (NR), the 25-year-old lefty who only seems like he’s been around the game for a decade and will be making his season debut. Price will have help from J.D. Martinez, who returns to the lineup at DH, while Blake Swihart plays...

Red Sox notebook: Alex Cora gets inventive with lineup in finale against Tigers

The Red Sox lineup that Alex Cora designed last night was unorthodox, to say the least, and he knew it.The rookie manager has a bench filled with versatility, but even he had to admit he wasn’t sure how it would play out for the series finale against the Detroit Tigers.“In the words of Tony La Russa, I’ll let you know after the game,” Cora said.As promised, Blake Swihart finally got his chance to catch. He was behind the plate for Jalen Beeks’ major league debut, his first time starting a game at catcher since 2015.That was just the beginning. With Mookie Betts still sidelined with...

Red Sox vs. Tigers lineup: Jalen Beeks starts, Blake Swihart catches

It’s all happening. The Red Sox (43-19) look to pull off a three-game sweep of the Tigers (29-34) tonight at Fenway Park (7:10 p.m., NESN, ESPN out-of-market) behind spot starter Jalen Beeks (NR), who will be making his big-league debut. About tonight’s game: Beeks, who who has more strikeouts in the International League than anyone, including former Sox prospect Michael Kopech, will toe the rubber for the big league club for the first time ever in a non-Spring Training game. On March 10, he started for the Sox in the Grapefruit League and faced 7 batters without recording an out. The...

Somebody once told me Mitch Moreland was an All-Star. They aren’t wrong this year. Plus Dustin Pedroia deals with injury, Matt Barnes pitches well and Blake Swihart wants to catch The Boston Red Sox were the first team to win 40 games this season. With success like that, its a foregone conclusion that the MLB All-Star game will feature at least a few players from the team’s roster. Voting for the Mid-Summer Classic opened last week and that means you can go cast your ballot for MLB-home run leader J.D. Martinez, top-10 wins above replacement player Mookie Betts and, if you were allowed...
