Brandon Belt helps lift Giants to 5-4 win over Phillies

Entering the series opener against Philadelphia, the Giants first baseman had just six hits in his previous 35 at-bats with runners in scoring position. With the bases loaded in the seventh inning and his team down one run, Belt hammered the second pitch he saw off the center-field wall for a double.

Giants’ Pena making most of opportunity

Perhaps buried behind the Giants’ run of wins is the emergence of backup infielder Ramiro Peña. In seven games (three starts) since his contract was purchased from Triple-A Sacramento on June 10, Peña is batting .444 (8-for-18) with four RBIs and two runs. “I feel good right now,” said Peña, whose strong throw on a bouncer toward third ended Friday’s win over the Phillies. After he slumped the following year, Peña spent all of 2015 in San Diego’s farm system. A switch-hitter known for his defensive versatility, Peña thrived at Sacramento before getting summoned two weeks...

Brandon Belt in All-Star picture

Brandon Belt in All-Star picture PITTSBURGH — Brandon Belt an All-Star? For the first time in his career it could happen. The Cubs’ Anthony Rizzo is running away with the first-base voting. In figures released Wednesday, he was the leading vote-getter in the National League at any position with more than 2.2 million. Belt was a distant second with about 839,000, but he has a chance to go as a reserve on the player ballot. Belt is having his best season at the plate and ranks second at the position behind Rizzo in OPS. “If it happens, it would be one of the coolest things to ever...

The Giants aren't leading at any position in the first 2016 All-Star Game ballot update

Buster Posey is close. Brandon Belt is second. But that's as good as it gets. This was almost predictable. For whatever reason, since the great Giants ballot-stuffing nuttiness of 2013, the Giants haven't done so hot when it comes to All-Star voting. So it's not a huge surprise that the first National League ballot update is up, and the Giants don't have a starter. It's a minor surprise, though, that they have just one player who is especially close. You can vote here, you know.
