Matt Holliday leaves game with right quad strain

In the first inning of Wednesday night's game between the St. Louis Cardinals and Cincinnati Reds at Busch Stadium, Matt Holliday dug into the batter's box. Matt Carpenter, who had worked a walk, led off first. Holliday hit a tapper that third baseman Todd Frazier fielded and tossed to second base, retiring Carpenter. But Carpenter did not go down with a slide, obstructing Brandon Phillips's throw enough to allow Holliday to reach first safely—if he had made it to the bag. Holliday pulled up lame while attempting to beat out the relay throw of the potential double play and never touched...

Trade Deadline Thoughts and Observations

by: Jack WardStaff WriterI attended the Reds game on Monday night against the Chicago Cubs. It was a great night. Saw Jay Bruce hit one a mile. Todd Frazier and Marlon Byrd each hit home runs. Brandon Phillips made another dazzling play and Aroldis Chapman blew them away in the ninth. I toured the Reds Hall of Fame before the game. I was very impressed. If you are a Reds fan you have to take this in, and come early so you can take your time. I spent about an hour and a half there and I actually needed about twice that see every display, but I hope to return in September and do just...

Brandon Phillips last night proved yet again that he’s the best defensive second baseman in baseball.  As a Reds fan, you’ve seen so many unbelievable plays from the Gold Glover that anything other than “jaw-dropping” is now considered average.  But don’t take it from me – check out the videos below and ask yourself if […]

Cincinnati Reds links - Johnny Cueto and Brandon Phillips to the Yankees?

Hump Day links! Jesse Spector of The Sporting News had an interesting proposal for the Cincinnati Reds this morning:  trade both Johnny Cueto and Brandon Phillips to the New York Yankees.  Spector argues that the recent history of decline in returns for rentals suggests that the Reds will have a hard time getting adequate prospects in return for Cueto, but the best way to augment their end of any deal would be to shed salary.  Enter the Yankees, who obviously have the financial wherewithal to stomach the 2 years and $27 million due to Phillips beyond 2015, and also conveniently have...

Max effort

This what the 2015 Reds were supposed to look like. Johny Cueto and Homer Bailey dominating on the mound. Joey Votto and Joey Votto returning to form and mashing from the left side; Todd Frazier, Devin Mesoraco from the right. Brandon Phillips, Zack Cozart and Billy Hamilton provide tight defense up the middle. Remember that …

Injury Report 7/4 - How Many Injuries Can Phillips Play Through At Once?

Sorry for the delay, but I have been sans internet for a week, so there is going to be a lot of injury news covered in this one.  Brandon Phillips took the lede, because even with his reputation and history of playing through injuries, this is just starting to border on impressive (or maybe depressive, depending on how you look at it).  Phillips has been playing through turf toe since mid May, then he strained his groin in early June, but has also been soldiering right along through that.  Then he jammed his thumb on June 23.  Then he hurt his hand again on June 28, but has returned...
