DH target Pedro Alvarez grew up loving Red Sox, even though he’s from Bronx

The Red Sox have had dalliances with Pedro Alvarez over the years. Could he finally join them? With the Red Sox in the market for an affordable DH on a one-year deal, and higher-profile performers like Carlos Beltran (Astros) and Matt Holliday (Yankees) leaving the board, someone like Alvarez could be a fit. That would […]

With Beltran and Holliday gone, DH options dwindling for Red Sox

No Beltran? No Holliday? What are the Red Sox to do? It was a quiet weekend for the Red Sox, but not for their American League competition, as the Astros and Yankees snapped up Carlos Beltran and Matt Holliday respectively. With the two veteran bats off the market, the Red Sox find their options for a David Ortiz replacement dramatically reduced. Of the two, Beltran is the bigger news for the Red Sox. While some fans were firmly on board the Matt Holliday bandwagon, there was never any real indication that the Sox were terribly interested in the long-time Cardinals outfielder. While they...

Report: Carlos Beltran agrees to one-year deal with Astros

Cross Carlos Beltran off the list of potential Red Sox designated hitters. According to ESPN’s Buster Olney, Beltran has agreed to a one-year, $16 million deal with the Astros that includes a full no-trade clause. Beltran, who turns 40 in April, hit .295 with an .850 OPS last year. The switch hitter was considered a […]

Feinsand: Carlos Beltran will not sign with the Yankees

According to Mark Feinsand, Carlos Beltran will make his free agent decision at some point today. He is not going to sign with the Yankees, however. The Yankees had interest in bringing Beltran back to fill their now vacant DH spot. I’ll have more on this later. My guess is Beltran winds up with the […] The post Feinsand: Carlos Beltran will not sign with the Yankees appeared first on River Avenue Blues.

POLL: Readers Remain Sharply Divided On Napoli/Beltran

POLL: Readers Remain Sharply Divided On Napoli/Beltran

Further voting in our latest FenwayNation Poll shows that readers are still just as divided as they were earlier on the relative value of Mike Napoli and Carlos Beltran as the new Red Sox DH. As the chart shows, the percentages are identical to earlier readings—with 41% siding with Napoli and 39% favoring Beltran. And, again, one voter in five (20%) thinks both options are inadequate for the new DH job. If you haven't yet, you can still vote in the poll HERE.

REPORT: Red Sox Want Carlos Beltran 'Badly'

Carlos BeltranAfter pulling out of the Edwin Encarnación sweepstakes, it looks like Dave Dombrowski is really hot after soon-to-be 40-year-old Carlos Beltran. According to ESPN.com's Scott Lauber, the Red Sox have been portrayed as wanting Beltran "badly". Of course, other teams are also lusting after the switch-hitter, including The Evil Ones and the Houston Astros. Beltran has averaged 21 HRs over the last three years—and also has the up-side of still being able to play the outfield occasionally. On another front, Boston has also reportedly been "in touch" with old friend and...

Red Sox among final four suitors for Carlos Beltran

The Red Sox are one of the last teams in on Carlos Beltran, but that doesn’t mean he’s going to be cheap. Carlos Beltran’s market is down to four teams, with the Red Sox among his final suitors. According to Joel Sherman, the Sox are up against the Yankees, Astros and, to a lesser extent, the Rangers for the services of the aging slugger. For the Red Sox, Beltran has long since emerged as their primary target to replace David Ortiz at DH. And while he’s not exactly the most exciting of targets, he is perhaps the best available player in the price range the Red Sox are looking...

One hot Yankees prospect could ease Cashman’s CBA concerns

Now more than ever it is important to grow your own. Having dealt Aroldis Chapman, Andrew Miller and Carlos Beltran for prospects this past July to compliment the high-end talent in the Yankees’ system, the club is in position to benefit from an infusion of young talent. That doesn’t mean the free agency market will...

Daily Red Sox Links: Carlos Beltran, Manny Ramirez, David Price

Today’s links look at the competition for Carlos Beltran, the team’s reluctance to dive into free agency, and a possible lockout. Carlos Beltran remains the hottest rumor for the Red Sox this winter, but they’re not the only team looking at him. (Brian MacPherson; Providence Journal) We’re still early in the offseason, but Boston appears less willing than usual to open their checkbooks. (Rob Bradford; WEEI) Even if he doesn’t make the Hall of Fame, Manny Ramirez remains one of the elite hitters in recent memory. (Alex Speier; Boston Globe) Either David Price has a sense of...

Scouting the Free Agent Market: Carlos Beltran

Last week the Yankees made their first major move of the offseason when they sent Brian McCann to the Astros for a pair of Single-A pitching prospects. The move cleared quite a bit of salary ($11.5M in both 2017 and 2018) and also freed up the DH position. That was McCann’s only real ticket to […] The post Scouting the Free Agent Market: Carlos Beltran appeared first on River Avenue Blues.
