‘Neighbor’ gets the eavesdrop on Marmol

Chicago Sun-Times — The realities of living in an age when social media often blurs with the news media literally hit home Wednesday for Carlos Marmol, when a casual meeting with his agents at his condo turned into brief media firestorm hours later. Marmol was caught off-guard when asked to respond to comments published on a Cubs-related blog after someone claiming to be Marmol’s neighbor admittedly eavesdropped on the meeting — in a community lounge space — and forwarded pictures and quotes to the blog via Twitter. The “neighbor” claimed...

Carlos Marmol wants to stay with Cubs

Chicago Cubs Blog | ESPN Chicago — CHICAGO -- Despite the fact that he has lost the closer job for the second straight season, reliever Carlos Marmol insists he would like to stay with the Chicago Cubs. Marmol’s contract expires after this season and he can declare free agency in November. After struggling earlier in the season, Marmol has pitched well as of late, making 10 straight scoreless appearances before giving up a home run on May 13 to the Rockies’ Josh Rutledge.

Marmol says he doesn't want out of Chicago

Chicago's Inside Pitch | Daily Herald — It was another teapot-tempest kind of day earlier as Cubs reliever Carlos Marmol denied a web site report that he wants out of town. The site, Bleacher Nation, wrote a story based on tweets and photos sent to the site by someone who photographed Marmol and his agents in a public area of his apartment building. The report had Marmol saying he “can’t wait” to get out of Chicago. “I know what I said, but I didn’t say anything about baseball,” Marmol said. “I don’t know who that guy is or why he tweeted it or whatever. I don’t know where that came from.” Marmol went on to say he loves Chicago and ...

Josh Rutledge helps Rockies avoid shutout

CBSSports.com Fantasy — Rockies second baseman Josh Rutledge wanted to make things competitive on Monday during a 9-1 loss at Chicago.  With Colorado down 9-0 in the top of the ninth and Carlos Marmol on for the Cubs, Rutledge hit a solo homer to put the Rockies on the board. The homer was his fifth of the season and his 11th RBI.  Rutledge went 1 for 3 with a walk in the game. He's batting .241. Rutledge has two homers and two RBI over his last 10 games.

Go grab Kevin Gregg

CBSSports.com Fantasy — Cubs closer Kevin Gregg received a vote of confidence from his manager Tuesday, and is not expected to give up his role even when the team's other options come back from injury. It's probably about time for Fantasy owners to begin looking at him in larger numbers, as his hold on the role seems strong. Gregg is enjoying some kind of resurgence for the Cubs after wresting the closer's role away from Carlos Marmol. While Marmol never had a very strong grip on the role, it's impressive to see nonetheless. Gregg has five saves in five opportunities, and has yet to allow a run in 8 1/3 innings. He h...

Hoyer defends, but doesn't explain, Marmol

Chicago Cubs Blog | ESPN Chicago — CHICAGO -- If you’ve been wondering why the Chicago Cubs continue to pitch -- or even employ -- reliever Carlos Marmol there are probably 9.8 million reasons. That’s the amount of money he’s making this season so releasing him seems like a longshot. He’ll collect that money whether he’s sitting in the Cubs bullpen or on his couch. Sending him to the minors really isn't an option either as he has to agree to the move. Marmol is 2-2 with a 5.

Cubs’ pitching coach: Carlos Marmol trying too hard

Chicago Sun-Times — Struggling reliever Carlos Marmol is rushing his delivery and at times “trying too hard,” Cubs pitching coach Chris Bosio said Sunday. “The biggest thing for Carlos is his concentration [on] executing the pitch” Bosio said. “I think where Carlos gets in trouble — along with the rest of the guys — is when they get going too fast. [Saturday] was a classic case of that. “You’ve got to slow it down, visualize the pitch and execute the pitch. And he’s capable of doing that.’’ Marmol pitched a scoreless sixth inning Sunday i...

  • Report: Detroit Tigers are not interested in Chicago Cubs closer Carlos Marmol
According to a source close to the organization, the Tigers are not, and never were, interested in Marmol, ESPN Chicago's Bruce Levine reported Tuesday. • Don't trade for Carlos Marmol
I do not like Carlos Marmol, Sam-I-am. I do not like him more than the big ham (and potatoes). The talk about the Tigers being interested in Carlos Marmol, I believe, I hope, was a bunch of insider rumor talk and nothing more. Looking over his career, it's hard to see any reason to trade for him other than the fact he has a positive figure under the "SV" column at baseball-reference.com. Great. He's got 115 saves. He also has about as much control as Andy Oliver. Yet somehow this was the solution proposed for the Tigers' supposed closed woes? Look, when people say "anyone can close" Ma...
