John Farrell steamed over ‘ass-backwards’ call that doesn’t go team’s way in loss to Tigers

The umpires didn’t cost the Red Sox Thursday’s ballyhooed matinee with the Tigers. Their bullpen did. But that didn’t stop the Sox from steaming over a peculiar play that didn’t go their way in the second inning. With one out and J.D. Martinez on first, Casey McGehee sent a sinking liner to center, where Jackie […]

Watch disputed call cause confusion in Tigers-Red Sox game

Red Sox manager John Farrell argued the call and Boston third base coach Brian Butterfield was ultimately ejected by home plate umpire Scott Barry. DETROIT -- When Boston's Jackie Bradley Jr. lunged for a sinking liner hit by Detroit's Casey McGehee in the second inning Thursday, it was clear to most at Comerica Park that he failed to make the catch. So when first base umpire Jerry Layne raised his arm to call McGehee out, chaos ensued. Detroit's J.D. Martinez, who was at first base, had already rounded second base by the time he realized that McGehee had...

Game 2016.117: Tigers at Rangers

You knew they would win one at some point on the road trip, but it was still a relief.  Casey McGehee had a career day, the Tigers left a buttload of runners on base (I mean butt in the sense of an old English unit of measurement, 1008 pints if you’re curious), when they weren’t […]

Despite spending year in Toledo, Casey McGehee is 'big-league player'

Despite spending year in Toledo, Casey McGehee is 'big-league player'

I was never concerned about Casey McGehee, manager Brad Ausmus said. ARLINGTON, Texas -- It may seem like an unusual thing to say about a player who has spent the entire season largely forgotten in Triple-A Toledo, but Detroit Tigers manager Brad Ausmus was adamant. Ever since spring training, the Tigers knew third baseman Casey McGehee was a big-league caliber player based on the way he fields, hits and conducts himself, Ausmus said. That's why he's not been shocked that McGehee's transition from Toledo to Detroit to replace the injured Nick Castellanos has...

Casey McGehee isn’t the only option for replacing Nick Castellanos

Juan Uribe is available, and could probably outperform the Tigers’ internal options. After a dramatic win with a play at the plate on Saturday, the Detroit Tigers should be riding high. At the time, they had won 10 out of 11 games and were in sole position of the second Wild Card spot. However, Nick Castellanos was plunked by New York Mets starter Logan Verrett and subsequently diagnosed with a non-displaced fracture in his left hand. Reports state that he might miss upwards of a month, which equates to the majority of the remaining regular season. Not exactly the news a team in the midst...

Tigers' third baseman Casey McGehee bittersweet over big-league return

McGehee was in the lineup and starting at third base for Detroit on Sunday. DETROIT -- This time, Casey McGehee brought two bat bags. With help from a pair of Detroit Tigers staffers, McGehee was one of the first members of the roster to stroll into the clubhouse Sunday morning. He was called up late Saturday after the Tigers placed Nick Castellanos, expected to miss the next month with a broken hand, on the disabled list. Even if it's another opportunity for the journeyman third baseman, McGehee understands the situation. "As happy as I am to be back, it's...

Game 2016.111: Mets at Tigers

The good news is the Tigers won again, and have the series against the Mets, and like our astute commenters pointed out, it was a real team victory. The bad news is Castellanos is out for 4-7 weeks, and the pitching mis-match of Sanchez vs. deGrom. Casey McGehee has been called up to replace Castellanos. […]
