Small changes have C.J. Cron on pace for a career year

Small changes have C.J. Cron on pace for a career year

His profile hasn’t changed, but the results have I’ll admit it—C.J. Cron has been a much bigger upgrade than I expected. Last season, the Twins used Joe Mauer as their primary first baseman, and Mauer earned about 1.2 WAR. When the Twins claimed Cron off waivers, I expected him to be a slight upgrade over Mauer, but not by much. Cron’s best season had been worth 2.0 WAR, and Mauer had topped that as recently as 2017, when he was worth 3.3 WAR. However, Cron is on pace for a career year. Through 64 games, he has already accumulated 1.7 WAR. This puts him on a full-season pace of...

C.J. Cron might be the Twins’ best offseason pickup

The Minnesota Twins took a risk claiming the first baseman off of waivers last winter, but he has rewarded the team bringing some pop back to first base. To the chagrin of many, the Minnesota Twins decided to go bargain shopping once again last winter. While there was a loud outcry for the team to […] C.J. Twins 6, Tigers 3: Homers and Pineda make much win

Twins 6, Tigers 3: Homers and Pineda make much win

in news that will SHOCK and ASTOUND you, the Twins hit home runs. An early two-run whomp from Mitch Garver plus later dingers by C.J. Cron and Nelson Cruz gave the Twins of Minnesota more runs than the Tigers of Detroit. Michael Pineda showed why the Twins picked him up despite a year-long injury in 2018; he can throw base balls very speedily. In his first game after a recent bout with knee tendinitis, his slider wasn’t going where Pineda wanted it to. So he relied on throwing two varieties of fastball, one hard and one harder. It got him through six full with only three runs allowed, all...

Indians 9, Twins 7: Pitching and defense let Twins down

Perez and bullpen falter, Twins can’t hold lead For the second consecutive night, the Minnesota Twins held a lead at Progressive Field but could not hang on. Now, the Twins’ lead over the Cleveland Indians in the A.L. Central stands at a still-comfortable 9 1⁄2 games. Of course, it’s more about the state of mind of each respective team at this point in the season, and the Indians will at least be able to say they held serve and won a series. Now, it’s up to the Twins to make sure they aren’t swept. Cleveland jumped out to 1-0 lead, but an RBI double from C.J. Cron and a massive,...

Rosario’s 9th-inning double gives Twins 5-3 win

A fantastic finish to a fantastic game. Well, that was fun. Following Thursday’s lopsided Rays victory, Minnesota came back to win this game after an early 3-1 deficit. The Twins are now 15-3 in the next game after a loss. That’s crazy. Your evening started with a first-inning RBI of Jorge Polanco from Willians Astudillo. Who got thrown out trying to score from first on a C.J. Cron double. It was gonna be that kind of night. Jose Berrios got taken deep by Kevin Keirmaier, who has a career .735 OPS. Tampa Bay made the lead 3-1 with a steal of home by Austin Meadows, who has a 1.105 OPS...

Twins 8, White Sox 1: Good, Good Gibby

Three key innings and a strong pitching performance lead the way to victory. The Good Gibby/Bad Gibby guessing game is well-known to fans in Twins Territory, and while the Dr. Jekyll version of Kyle Gibson has appeared more often than not lately, it’s always exciting to see him turn in a solid start. Today, he did jut that, striking out nine Sox and giving up just one run in seven strong innings of work. Minnesota got on the board first with a two-run double by the red-hot C.J. Cron in the home first. Jose Abreu cut the lead in half with a fourth-inning homer — perhaps Gibson’s only...
