Cliff Pennington getting cozy with bench

CBSSports.com Fantasy — With Didi Gregorius' emergence, Diamondbacks veteran shortstop Cliff Pennington has seen his playing time dwindle. In fact, he's been sharing time at second base with Josh Wilson and Martin Prado, and he's made just three starts since May 5. He could see even less playing time when Aaron Hill (hand) comes off the disabled list. Pennington is batting just .212 through 34 games and isn't exactly forcing his way into the lineup. "When you get a chance to play you got to play," Pennington said, per The Arizona Republic. "I got off to a slow start and had a rough stretch for a few at-bats, but I’ve...

Diamondbacks could be conservative with Didi Gregorius

CBSSports.com Fantasy — Diamondbacks general manager Kevin Towers suggested his club will be conservative with freshly recalled shortstop Didi Gregorius' playing time, the Arizona Republic reports. "We've kind of been real cautious with him," Towers said.  For now, the Diamondbacks can play Eric Chavez at third, Cliff Pennington at shortstop and Martin Prado at second, with Gregorius serving as a backup infielder. Pennington has experience at second base as well, though, and as such we could see an infield with Prado at third base (his original position this season), Pennington at second base and Gregorius starting a...

Cliff Pennington playing every inning at shortstop

CBSSports.com Fantasy — Diamondbacks shortstop Cliff Pennington has spent every inning of the team's first nine games at shortstop, including all of a 16-inning contest in the first week of the season. The Diamondbacks are short on options at the position with both Willie Bloomquist and Didi Gregorius on the disabled list. Pennington may be in for a night off in the team's weekend series agianst the Dodgers. He has struggled against left-handers in his career, and the Diamondbacks are slated to face southpaws on Friday and Saturday. If he sits, utlility infielder Josh Wilson would likely draw the start at shortstop. ...

This Date in A's History, April 9

Athletics Nation — What a difference a year makes. In the starting lineup for the A’s – just one season ago, mind you – were Jemile Weeks, Kurt Suzuki, Daric Barton, and Cliff Pennington. Jonny Gomes also checked in as a pinch-hitter. The A’s managed seven singles on the evening - and were also issued five walks - which they turned into one run (while leaving nine men on base). But the run stood up! Thanks to Tommy Milone (8IP, 3H, 0R), the A’s shook off a season-opening series loss to Seattle with a 1-0 blanking of the mighty (cough) Kansas City Royals. Suzuki had himself quite a night, collecti...

He is slated to face the Cardinals on the road Saturday. The 27-year-old did n...

Arizona Diamondbacks defeat St. Louis Cardinals in longest game at Chase Field

Arizona Republic — When it was finally over, after they sang Take Me Out to the Ballgame twice, ran the Legends Race twice, and the clock stood at 12 minutes after midnight, Cliff Pennington did the safest thing he could do. After driving in the winning run with a single up the middle in the bottom of the 16th inning early Thursday morning, he turned around and looked for the biggest teammate he could hug.
