Nationals vs. Padres: Dan Haren struggles again in 13-4 defeat

Washington Post — SAN DIEGO — At times during their first week out West, the Washington Nationals showed glimpses of shedding their disappointing start to this season. At times during Sunday afternoon, they played as if intent on reversing any positive thrust they had gathered. Their offense showed a pulse, at least, but only after starter Dan Haren tumbled back into his troubling early-season form and their bullpen imploded. Read full article >>

Nationals-Padres discussion thread: Game 44

Washington Post — The Nationals will try to finish their first week out West with a winning record behind Dan Haren, who was excellent in a loss in Los Angeles. The Braves won yesterday, and so the Nationals enter the afternoon down by 1 games in the NL East. They'll face flamethrower Andrew Cashner, the polar opposite of soft-tossing Eric Stults, who improbably shut them down yesterday. Talk about the game right here. Read full article >>

Padres 13, Nationals 4: Haren Develops Bad Case Of The Runs

Gaslamp BallDan Haren was one of several free agents Padres fans had hoped Josh Byrnes would sign to bolster a weak starting rotation. He now has a 5.54 ERA after being hammered for 7 runs in 5 innings this afternoon. Meanwhile, Andrew Cashner turned in his third quality start in a row, his fourth in his six starts. While Tim Stauffer struggled out of the bullpen, Joe Thatcher and Tyson Ross shut down the Nats for 2.2 innings to wrap things up. I know I'm burying the lede here, but I want to give some love to the Padres pitching staff, who have gone from a 4.53 ERA in March and April to a 3.49 ERA...

Game #44 Recap: When It Rains, It Pours.

Citizens of Natstown — The Nationals aimed to take the series win in San Diego to go 3 for 4 before heading off to San Francisco.Unfortunately, a 13-4 loss and more shaky defense would not allow the Nationals to do so. He immediately gave up a single to Everth Cabrera. Cabrera then stole 2nd, then went to 3rd on a wild pitch from Dan Haren. Chase Headley got on base via the walk. Still not sold on Dan Haren

CBSSports.com Fantasy — Nationals starting pitcher Dan Haren has turned his season around in recent starts by eschewing strikeouts and ignoring the radar gun. While that has led to three quality starts in his last four, I’m going to go ahead and be that guy who argues with success. Haren has made a point of publicly noting his lack of concern with his declining fastball velocity, claiming that overthrowing was the cause of his early seasons struggles. And while that may be the case, I also cannot endorse Haren as a reliable Fantasy option if he is just pitching to contact. This is still a guy who struggles to keep th...

  • Post-Game 38 Thread: Kershaw Takes Out The Wash
No, that's not Kershaw, but you get the idea.DODGERS 2, NATIONALS 0 The Nationals' Dan Haren was pretty good tonight, going 7.0 IP and yielding four hits. Except one of those hits was a two-run-scoring shot up the middle, surprisingly off the bat of Andre Ethier. And that was all the Dodgers needed, given that Clayton Kershaw was incredible: 8.2 IP, 5 H, 0 R, 11 Ks and 1 BB. Kershaw was dealing tonight and though it was prudent to pull him after Adam LaRoche singled with two out in the ninth (a career 132 pitches for Kershaw), it's a little sad that Kershaw couldn't snag that last out. ...
  • Game 38 Thread: May 14 vs. Nationals, 7p
Clayton Kershaw (3-2, 1.62) vs. Dan Haren (4-3, 5.17). The Dodgers have been quite a mystery this year (click on that link, it's worth the payoff), though certainly not much of a thriller. We lead the NL in OBP (.335), but are tied for 13th in slugging percentage (.373). A plague of injuries has afflictedour starting pitching corps. And defensive gaffes in the field abound (the Dodgers are tied for 12th in the NL in team errors). Drop down to the individual level, and the plot thickens. Since April 14th when he was batting .300, Andre Ethier has largely disappeared, leaving a big gap...
