Eveland (L), Lester (R)Pedro Martinez gets the special treatment—and so does Jason Varitek, Tim Wakefield and (amazingly) Roger Clemens. The treatment in question is the protection of a former player's number from being worn by a clearly inferior individual. Unfortunately, that favor was not accorded to Jon Lester—recently departed to the North Side of Chicago. Lester's old jersey #31 is now being worn by (get ready for this) Dana Eveland. FORT MYERS — No. 31 walks around the Red Sox clubhouse as anxiously as anybody hoping to avoid unemployment.While most teams had no interest in seeing him pitch at this time last year, he believes his left arm can still spin a vicious slider and he’s hoping it might land him a chance to pitch out of the Sox bullpen at some point this season.But nobody told Dana Eveland about his number.
