Rapid Reaction: Cardinals 4, Mets 2

Mets Blog | ESPN New York — WHAT IT MEANS: Oops, they did it again. Inheriting runners on the corners from Shaun Marcum with two outs in the seventh inning and the score tied, Scott Rice tossed a wild pitch that allowed Daniel Descalso to race home from third with the go-ahead run. The Mets ultimately lost to the St. Louis Cardinals 4-2 Wednesday night at Busch Stadium, spoiling Marcum’s first solid outing as a Met and Rick Ankiel’s game-tying two-run homer. Jeff Roberson/Associated Press With Ty Wigginton batting, the second pitch from Scott Rice skipped by John Buck for a run-scoring wild pitch that gave St.

Matt Carpenter's role is safe

CBSSports.com Fantasy — When Daniel Descalso got the start over Matt Carpenter at second base for the Cardinals in David Freese's return from the DL Tuesday, the Fantasy owners who targeted Carpenter as their eventual second baseman were worried. Even when he returned to the lineup Tuesday, it didn't eliminate those feelings of doubt given that he was replacing Freese rather than Descalso. You can breathe, Carpenter owners. Both he and Freese were in the lineup Wednesday, with Carpenter at second base, and as of the seventh inning, our ace in the hole had gone 3 for 4 with a homer. I'd say his role is safe. And I mai...

Once Freese is ready to play, Descalso could be replaced by Carpenter at second.

Daniel Descalso to provide second helping

CBSSports.com Fantasy — Cardinals infielder Daniel Descalso has earned a starting job after all -- at least for the beginning of the season. With regular third baseman David Freese set to open the season on the disabled list, St. Louis will move Matt Carpenter to the hot corner and give Descalso starting time at second base. Carpenter and Descalso have battled for the everyday job at second for most of the spring thanks to Descalso's improved production at the plate (.356 average and two home runs).

So conflicted: Matt Carpenter or Daniel Descalso?

CBSSports.com Fantasy — Please, Daniel Descalso, won't you just go away? The Cardinals are so close to naming Matt Carpenter their starter at second base -- with manager Mike Matheny recently saying he no longer sees him as a liability at the position -- that I'm pretty much to the point where I'm passing on every other second baseman in the draft (after Ben Zobrist goes off the board, anyway), knowing that I can grab Carpenter and his Martin Prado-like skill set late. It's just that Descalso -- that pesky little glove man who everybody knows brings almost nothing to the table offensively -- decided to hit a little h...
