Brett Anderson sticks in A’s rotation; Mengden to stay in minors, for now

Brett Anderson will remain in Oakland’s rotation, as expected, coming out of the break. The left-hander will start Monday at Texas, with Frankie Montas the likely choice Tuesday. That means that Daniel Mengden, who was the A’s best starter in May with a 1.51 ERA,, will remain at Triple-A Nashville for the time being. Mengden threw seven innings for the Sounds on Thursday and allowed five hits, a walk and two runs while striking out two in his first start back off the DL. “It’s nice we’re getting guys back now,” manager Bob Melvin said of the...

With starters nearing health, A’s have tough decisions looming

With several starters lined up and waiting to rejoin the rotation, the A’s will have some interesting decisions to make before the All-Star break. Brett Anderson, who threw 5 2/3 innings at Triple-A Nashville on Tuesday as he works his way back from a shoulder strain, could be back as soon as Sunday or Monday, with Trevor Cahill and Daniel Mengden expected back sometime this month. Considering how well the A’s makeshift rotation has done recently - 4-1 with 9/35.1 over the past seven games - while the team has had six starters on the DL, the team has...

A’s Daniel Mengden to DL, Chris Bassitt to start

DETROIT - Chris Bassitt’s yo-yo season is starting to accelerate. The starter, sent down Saturday, will start against the Tigers on Wednesday. Because of Oakland’s seemingly non-stop starting pticher injuries, most recently Daniel Mengden, Bassitt is becoming a semi-regular. He started at Chicago last Friday, was sent back to Triple-A Nashville on Saturday, and he flew back to Detroit on Tuesday in advance of his start. Mengden will be placed on the disabled list Wednesday with a right-foot sprain. Manager Bob Melvin said that an MRI did not show any...

Daniel Mengden leaves A’s game early with right foot injury

CHICAGO - Daniel Mengden is the latest in a long line of A’s starters to go down with an injury this season. The right-hander left Oakland’s game against the White Sox after two innings with a right foot sprain, the team announced. Mengden, who allowed five runs in the first and threw 44 pitches in his two innings of work, has a history of foot injuries dating back to college, and he required surgery to repair the sesamoid bone in his right foot before the 2017 season.

Dylan Covey faces A's, his old team, for the first time

Dylan Covey (3-2, 2.90 ERA) makes his first career appearance against the Athletics, the team that drafted him in 2013. The Sox took him in the Rule 5 draft in December 2016. Covey faces fellow right-hander Daniel Mengden (6-6, 4.06) and will try to follow Lucas Giolito’s strong start on Friday....
