Tigers 2, Rays 0: A different side of a shutout

Kim Klement-USA TODAY Sports Tigers offense looks shaky, but defense and pitching get the job done The Tigers looked pretty good as they beat the Rays in shutout fashion. This ends a 38-game losing streak when scoring two runs or less. Daniel Norris started the game, or opened if you prefer, and threw three shutout innings. He gave up one hit, walked two and struck out three during that time. His stuff was working at least a little, which was on display as he got Austin Meadows to swing right over an inside changeup below the zone in the third inning. It was Drew VerHagen who came in...

BYB Podcast 54: These are hard times for a Tigers fan, Nicholas Castellanos

Photo by Rob Tringali/MLB Photos via The BYB staff breaks down the week in Tigers news and more. We’re back after another somewhat grim week in Tigers baseball. The losing has ceased to feel grim actually, with the wins being savored where possible. But the loss of JaCoby Jones, Christin Stewart’s concussion issues, and rough outings from Daniel Norris and Matt Boyd have really rubbed the salt in. Of course, no one is rubbing the salt in more than our dear friend Nick... Matt Boyd is giving up homers. Nick Castellanos is hitting them. Blaine Hardy and JaCoby Jones are probably...

Royals 10, Tigers 2: Soler and Dozier and Merrifield, oh my

Raj Mehta-USA TODAY Sports The Tigers dropped the series finale to split the four-gamer. Daniel Norris was up-and-down and Hunter Dozier and Jorge Soler were unstoppable... but at least Drew VerHagen looked (mostly) sharp. In the end the Tigers and Royals split the four-game weekend series as KC took the Sunday game 10-2. Whit Merrifield started off the game like he did on Friday night with a leadoff home run; unlike a couple of days ago, though, this one was over the fence. An out later, Dozier followed suit with a no-doubter. Not good, Danny. Niko Goodrum returned the favour in the...

Photo by Dave Reginek/ Why times through the order is more important than pitch counts The Tigers dropped their fourth game in a row, and their 12th in 13 tries to the Mariners on Friday night at T-Mobile stadium in Seattle. Yusei Kikuchi took the mound for the Mariners in his first appearance against Detroit, and promptly retired the Tigers on six pitches in the top of the first inning. Daniel Norris got the start for Detroit, having allowed 20 earned runs in his last four starts. Mallex Smith led off the first inning for the Mariners with a single up the middle, but was caught...

Phillies interested in Greene, maybe even Daniel Norris

Photo by Mark Cunningham/MLB Photos via The Phillies have mostly shown interest in Greene and Matthew Boyd so far. The Philadelphia Phillies have already shown interest in Detroit Tigers lefthander Matthew Boyd this summer, and will get a firsthand look at the 28-year-old on Tuesday when they kick off a short two-game series at Comerica Park. We can add Shane Greene to their watch list, according to NBC Sports Philadelphia’s Jim Salisbury, and maybe even Daniel Norris too. Salisbury’s report centers around Boyd, but notes that Philadelphia’s front office has “had conversations...

Blue Jays 7, Tigers 5: Same old, same old

Tim Fuller-USA TODAY Sports A rain delay, a bullpen collapse and a lost series. Yup, just another Tigers game. Another game, another rain delay, another loss. After Daniel Norris rattled off four strong innings in his first career start against the team that drafted him, a near-hour long stoppage hit Comerica Park and the lefthander took the rest of the evening off. Norris allowed a leadoff single followed by a run-scoring double, but composed himself to follow up a rough first inning with three consecutive scoreless frames. He struck out three, throwing 40 strikes on 58...
