Mariners trade OF Boog Powell to Athletics for 1B Yonder Alonso, also trade Luis Rengifo for RHP Ryan Garton

It’s a renter’s market. As we arose groggily from a night of baseball-free festivities, Jerry Dipoto made his move. Welcome to Seattle, @YonderalonsoU!The Mariners have acquired the first baseman from Oakland in exchange for Boog Powell. pic.twitter.com/QT6Z8bz4Ey— Mariners (@Mariners) August 6, 2017 The immediate impact is clear. With the bullpen stabilized, the Mariners feel more comfortable using a roster spot on a platoon at 1B. If ever there was a player who could use that help it is the dutiful Danny Valencia, who has labored against RHPs this year, as he has for the...

Let’s Talk About Danny Valencia

Let’s Talk About Danny Valencia

Luke and Anders get together to discuss the recent success of the Mariners’ first baseman Danny Valencia has been on a tear lately. Offensively and defensively, he’s proving his doubters wrong one game at a time. Luke and I, your resident Valencia supporters from Day One, got together to break down the first baseman’s season. Below is a transcription of that chat. Away we go! Anders Jorstad: Well, Luke. They finally did it. The Mariners actually have themselves a half-decent first baseman. It sure took some time for him to show it, but he's back to his old self. This is what I said...

Sam Gaviglio vs. Brad Peacock Last night, the Mariners snatched a win from the best team in baseball, and it was fantastic. Ariel Miranda was mostly sharp through five innings, the big bats bopped bigly, and the defense went full Hogwarts with displays of wizardry, from the outfield to Jean Segura’s game-saving snag to this underrated but impressive play from Danny Valencia: CO-LEADER IN DRS AT FIRST WHAT WHAT Tonight things get a little bit harder. Sam Gaviglio shares Miranda’s home run problem, but unfortunately does not share the tall lefty’s fastball velocity...

Mariners beat Astros in 10 innings after Jean Segura comes up big in the ninth

Two brilliant defensive plays by shortstop Jean Segura in the bottom of the ninth staved off a seemingly inevitable walk-off victory, and back-to-back solo homers from Kyle Seager and Danny Valencia in the top of the 10th sent the Mariners to a stunning 9-7 victory over the Astros.
