VEB 2017 Projections Results: Dexter Fowler

Here are Dexter Fowler’s projections Thanks for your help. This is what we said when we asked for projections on Dexter Fowler: Dexter Fowler is a skillful guy. Along with being thoughtful and engaging with fans, he possesses some of the best plate discipline in baseball, is an above-average offensive threat, and plays solid defense in centerfield. So say his 2016 stats anyway which by most WAR metrics was his most productive season to date. For a refresher, in 551 plate appearances Fowler slashed .276/.393/.447, good for a career-high 129 wRC+. According to FanGraphs, he was also an...

Defense, speed, and the 2011 Cardinals

Defense, speed, and the 2011 Cardinals

The central theme of this off-season has been improving facets of the Cardinals which were largely ignored in building the 2011 champions When the St. Louis Cardinals signed Dexter Fowler to a five-year contract in December, his bat was a major consideration, but so too was his well-rounded game. His fielding, roughly average over the last two seasons, creates an indirect upgrade for the Cardinals defense—by allowing Randal Grichuk to slide over to left field, this represents a marked improvement over the defensive production the team received in 2016 at the position, primarily from Matt...

Is Randal Grichuk a elite left fielder?

Is Randal Grichuk a elite left fielder?

It’s generally accepted that even an average center fielder will be a great defensive left fielder, but is that true for the Greek God of Flow? In acquiring Dexter Fowler, the Cardinals poised themselves to improve their outfield defense in two ways: Fowler - while there is some question about his numbers - is expected to be a slight upgrade over Randal Grichuk as a defender in center. But the acquisition also moves Grichuk into left field, where he is expected to be a significant upgrade over Matt Holliday. Late-career Holliday’s defensive limitations are well-known, so it won’t be a...

St. Louis Cardinals: New Outfield Reminiscent of Late 90s Group

The St. Louis Cardinals have a new outfield unit, and while fans may see uncertainty in this young group, history teaches us that this group will be successful and fun to watch. Many fans look at the St. Louis Cardinals projected starting outfield of Randal Grichuk, Dexter Fowler, and Stephen Piscotty and they see uncertainty.  […] St. Louis Cardinals: New Outfield Reminiscent of Late 90s Group - Redbird Rants - Redbird Rants - A St. Louis Cardinals Fan Site - News, Blogs, Opinion and More

Cardinals news and notes: Wacha, 2011, Martinez

Bob Gibson’s absurd 1968 season (plus news and notes) Eight-one year old Bob Gibson was at Cardinals’ camp on Tuesday to dispense wisdom and drop a solid burn on the Cubs when meeting Dexter Fowler for the first time. You may have heard about it. I don’t get a ton out of spring training, most of the games are happening when I’m at work and distinguishing between revelatory and non-revelatory news isn’t alway easy. (Should l be excited about Adam Wainwright’s pitching thus far? I don’t know.) The cameos from the old-timer, Hall of Fame types is always a nice touch at Cardinals...

Will the Cardinals improve their base running in 2017?

Will the Cardinals improve their base running in 2017?

Whiteyball may never return, but can the Cardinals become a more efficient running team this season? In 2016, with the Chicago Cubs, now-St. Louis Cardinals center fielder Dexter Fowler stole 13 bases and was caught four times. He was a solid and efficient base runner, but nobody would confuse him with vintage Rickey Henderson or Lou Brock. Fowler was one of 67 Major League players to swipe ten or more bases while successfully converting two-thirds of his steal attempts, typically considered the break-even point at which attempting to steal bases are worth the trouble. MLB teams averaged 2...

Dexter Fowler’s switch hitting could help the Cardinals

Dexter Fowler’s switch hitting could help the Cardinals

Another reason to like the Fowler signing Other than Brayan Pena’s fourteen plate appearances in 2016, the Cardinals went the entire season without having the built-in platoon advantage of a switch hitter. That will change this season with switch-hitting Dexter Fowler penciled in to the top of the lineup night in and night out, and while I’d hesitate to argue that this will be a significant difference-maker, it does at least seem noteworthy. Fowler has good career numbers hitting from both sides of the plate. In 3,140 plate appearances from the left side, he’s slashed .255/.356/.413,...
