Mariners take a 6-3 loss in 10 innings on walkoff homer

Mariners Blog | Seattle Times — The Mariners had plenty of chances to win this game, but just could not get a big hit when they needed it the final few innings. Come to think of it, the Cleveland Indians couldn't get one either until the very end, with the Mariners retiring 16 in a row at one point. But Lucas Luetge walked Drew Stubbs with two out in the 10th, then saw him steal seconf. Michael Bourn then hit a slow roller past Luetge for an infield single that put runners at the corners. Jason Kipnis came up next and hit a walkoff three-run homer to hand Seattle a 6-3 loss. Luetge had Kipnis 0-1 in the count, but the next o...

Cleveland Indians notebook: Strikeouts not coming at expected rate, and that’s good

Akron Beacon Journal — DETROIT: When the season began, many observers expected the Indians’ offense to be at or near the top of the American League in strikeouts, having signed former league leaders Drew Stubbs and Mark Reynolds. But so far, the Tribe is nowhere near the team lead, nor are Stubbs and Reynolds striking out at expected rates.Manager Terry Francona is happy that his club is not living up to projections, but he also isn’t going to lose sleep about it.“The best way for me to get the best out of my players is not to harp on what they can’t do but what they do well,” he said. “What we’re looking for is prod...

Sheldon Ocker: The Write Stuff

Akron Beacon Journal — Mr. Ocker:Man, I have to say your assessment of Monday night’s (April 22) win over the White Sox was pretty harsh.I am as underwhelmed as you are thus far in 2013, but remember the hot starts of the previous two losing seasons?Regardless, Drew Stubbs beat out an infield hit and stole second in a one-run game. Asdrubal Cabrera came through with a base hit. That hardly sounds like they were given a win. We have to celebrate this Stubbs guy — freaking real live ballplayer.Pete WrightDear Pete:Harsh?Matt Thornton threw a ball into center field trying to pick off Stubbs at second to put Indians run...
