At-bats will continue to hold back Eric Chavez

CBSSports.com Fantasy — With another three hits, including a triple, Monday at Colorado, the Diamondbacks' Eric Chavez is hitting .343 with a .984 OPS this year -- numbers good enough to make him the 15th-best third baseman in Head-to-Head leagues so far. Unfortunately, the way the Diamondbacks use him, he has no hope of climbing those rankings. But don't take my word for it: "You'll find if I do it [play him more] he will wear down a little bit and probably have medical problems," manager Kirk Gibson said after Monday's game. "We can't afford that." Not only does Chavez sit against lefties, but he never plays more t...

Eric Chavez a good option for Week 9

CBSSports.com Fantasy — Last week, the Diamondbacks faced a string of right-handed pitchers, so Eric Chavez saw more action than usual. In his 19 plate appearances, the left-handed Chavez went 9 for 17 with two walks, one home run and five RBI, and he racked up a season-high 21 Fantasy points. Chavez almost never faces lefties, but in Fantasy Week 9 (May 27-June 2), that won't be much of a problem. The Diamondbacks are scheduled to face at least five righty starters in their seven games, and if Yu Darvish starts one of Monday's doubleheader games for the Rangers instead of Martin Perez, that makes six. The veteran th...

Arizona Diamondbacks' solid defense helps cover up injuries, slumps

Arizona Republic — Diamondbacks third baseman Eric Chavez learned early on in his major-league career that playing good defense at his position wasn't an option. It was a priority. "I had two balls go through my legs and the pitcher just kind of looked at me like he wanted to kill me," said Chavez, a six-time Gold Glove winner. "I actually know his name but I don't want to say it. But that kind of motivated me. Not only do I look bad, but now he's got to throw more pitches and he looks bad. So it affects more than just yourself."
