SD4, LAD1: Tonight the Dodgers Lose

Earning a much-needed victory, but ALWAYS more importantly: a Dodgers loss. Liriano was hot hot hot, Stultsy helps his own cause, and Quackenbush achieves a career first. For the fourth straight game, Eric Stults has given up 2 runs or less. With the offense working last night, and the pitching a bit off, tonight's synchronicity between a iron-walled Stultsy and a smart opportunity-taking lineup created a beautiful shiny Padres win. Most of us also learned that Cameron Maybin was finally done serving his suspension for a medication policy misunderstanding. We didn't get to see him in...

Game Preview 8/20/14 Dodgers vs. Padres

The Padres spoiled an early 3-run lead and lost 8-6 to the Dodgers on Tuesday night. Despite a 4-for-5 night from Abraham Almonte, a  3-run homer from Jedd Gyorko, and 14 total hits from the Padres, the Dodgers strength was just too much for the Friars. Wednesday night it will be recently hot Eric Stults […] Game Preview 8/20/14 Dodgers vs. Padres - Friars on Base - Friars on Base - A San Diego Padres Fan Site - News, Blogs, Opinion and More

Eric Stults looks to stay undefeated in August

Despite some great offense by our Padres in last night's series opener at Chavez Ravine, they couldn't get it done with pitching and defense. Hopefully Eric Stults can have better results tonight as they try to even up the series. Stults has struggled this year, but has been pitching much better lately. He's 2-0 with a 1.37 ERA in his three August starts so far. But if history is any indication, getting back to Dodger Stadium may put an end to that streak. The southpaw is 1-4 with a 3.96 ERA in six overall starts against is former team. Four of those outings took place in L.A., where he's...

SD3, STL4: Terrible Call Ends Streak

SD3, STL4: Terrible Call Ends Streak

Bob Davidson does not know how to do his job at all, and more. Before we get into the garbage calls, the nonsense umpiring, and the basic lack of common sense, let's look at what lead up to the anticlimactic finisher of tonight's hard-fought loss. Tonight in St. Louis the Padres took on the team with a bird mascot. Coming off a series sweep against the Rockies, San Diego was looking to extend their winning streak and start the series against the Cardinals on a good note. The Good Things looked fresh. Eric Stults, who posted an ERA of 1.42 for his first week of August, was back on fire...

Eric Stults goes for third straight win as Padres try to keep hot streak going

It'll take some hard work and a lot of help from other teams, but our Padres could very well find themselves back in the wild card race in the coming weeks. They did everything they needed to do in their last series, sweeping the Rockies to improve to 57-62 on the season. Now they hit the road again for 11 days as they try to inch closer to .500 ball and maybe shrink the gap between themselves and the wild card. St. Louis is the first stop for our boys, and Eric Stults will get things started in tonight's opener. Stults has been easily the least impressive starter on the Padres staff, and...

SD2, PIT1: Stults Swashbuckles Bucs

The Padres flipped the script tonight and maintained some of the best pitching in the National League. For the second game in a row in beautiful PNC Park, the Padres and Pirates have clamped down on each other and kept the total runs for the night at 3. The only difference tonight is that the Padres are the ones who came out on top, scoring twice as much as Pittsburgh! Baseball can seem like poetry sometimes, and tonight the boxscore almost perfectly rhymed with last night. The Friars collected one less hit, and one more run. The 'Rats had one more hit, but one less run. Eric Stults struck...

Padres Even Series Behind Stults, Bullpen

The magnificent pitching the majority of the San Diego Padres’ pitching staff has encountered, has finally rubbed off on Eric Stults. Entering the game, Stults was coming off the best start of the season, having gone 6 2/3 innings, not allowing a single run and only a pair of hits to the Atlanta Braves. Eric Stults goes opposite Francisco Liriano in game 2 at PNC Park

Eric Stults hasn't been having the best season of his career. But he is coming off one of his better starts, and hopefully he can carry over some of that success into today's matchup at PNC Park. Stults kept the Braves to one unearned run on two hits in 6 1/3 innings last Friday. But the road has been a tough place for the 34-year-old this season. He is 0-9 with a 5.78 ERA in 12 away starts this year. And he's not the only one missing home. The Padres have dropped five of their last six games on the road, including yesterday's series opener in Pittsburgh. But hopefully the offense can work...

Stults looks to redeem himself against Braves

Th last time Eric Stults took the mound against the Braves, he didn't fare so well.  That was less than a week ago, his most recent start, when our Padres traveled to Atlanta for a series at Turner Field. Stults surrendered six runs through six innings of work, resulting in his NL-worst 13th loss of the season. Prior to that, however, he had gone 2-1 with a 1.93 ERA in his three previous appearances against the Braves. Stults has had a rough season, to put it lightly, and doesn't seem long for the Padres rotation. He'll get another chance against the Braves tonight, but with Cashner's...
