Reds at Giants, Game 3: Preview and Lineups

Can Cincinnati salvage a game? It feels like just seconds ago that we were bubbling with optimism about the Cincinnati Reds for the first time in who the hell knows how long. A 6-game win streak, a sweep of the Los Angeles Dodgers on a dreaded west coast trip, and visions of sugar plums danced in our heads. Well, a blink later and we’ve seen Joey Votto’s back flare up and send him to the bench, Eugenio Suarez’s ankle roll over and send him to the bench, and we now get to cross our fingers that reclamation project Matt Harvey can salvage a game against the San Francisco Giants to avoid...

Reds blow early lead, lose to Giants 5-3

Reds blow early lead, lose to Giants 5-3

Them’s the breaks. The Joe Nuxhall Memorial Honorary Star of the Game Eugenio Suarez has shrugged off his early-season busted thumb and kept right on raking since returning to the Cincinnati Reds, and on Tuesday that continued to be the case. Even after he gave us all a scare by rolling his ankle diving back into 2B, he ripped a 2-run dinger and a double, and finished the evening having gone 2 for 3 with a walk and a run scored. Heck, he even did so while hitting in the 3-spot on the night while Joey Votto and his balky back got a night of rest. That’s plenty good enough for a JNMHSotG...

So the Cincinnati Reds might be a half-decent baseball team after all

So the Cincinnati Reds might be a half-decent baseball team after all

Who knew? Does anyone even remember April anymore? After a six game stretch that saw the Cincinnati Reds win every outing of the bunch, there’s finally a bit of optimism around these parts. Truthfully, it may not even have to truly be classified as optimism as much as it is simply non-pessimism, since we’ve finally had the chance to view enough decent baseball to not come to expect the worst possible scenario to befall our Reds at each and every turn of a game. Joey Votto is far from toast. The busted thumb we thought might derail Eugenio Suarez’s first season under long-term contract...

The Reds win!

The Reds win!

Eugenio Suarez keeps on hitting and hitting and hitting and... The Joe Nuxhall Memorial Honorary Star of the Game So the Reds aren’t good, sure. We know that. But there’s a pretty good case to be made for “Reds offense: actually good!”, and that case becomes more obvious when you actually get to see them all healthy and playing at the same time. We didn’t get to see it for the first two or three weeks of the season. Two of the Reds hottest (and probably, best, this side of Joey Votto) hitters hit the disabled list early on this season. Couple that with predictably bad pitching...

Marlins at Reds, Game 2: Preview and Lineups

Tyler Mahle’s gonna get a win streak a-rollin’. The Cincinnati Reds played, and won, a baseball game yesterday. What a time to be alive! Tyler Mahle will be on the bump for the Reds today as they look to kick together a win streak, something we’ve rarely seen over the past few years in Cincinnati. Given that it’s the Miami Marlins, their chances of doing just that actually seem quite decent, all told. Lefty Caleb Smith will be on the mound for Miami, and when Eugenio Suarez gets a crack at left-handed pitching...hooooo boy, things get juicy for the Cincinnati offense. So get out to...

The Reds won a baseball game!

The Reds won a baseball game!

It was real, and spectacular. The Joe Nuxhall Memorial Honorary Star of the Game Eugenio Suarez has all the arby-eyes at this point. Every last one of them. Despite missing some three weeks of the Cincinnati Reds season, the recently-extended 3B leads the squad in runs driven in, in part because there has rarely been a single pitch in a big spot that he hasn’t thumped the hell out of so far in this otherwise miserable season. That held true on Friday, as the lefty-masher hit an early 3-run dinger of LHP Wei-Yin Chen, later walked twice, and has firmly established himself as the go-to...

The Reds lost.

The Reds lost.

You know the deal. The Joe Nuxhall Memorial Honorary Star of the Game Eugenio Suarez has yet to miss a beat since returning to the Cincinnati Reds from the DL, and the resident 3B had another solid night on Tuesday. Geno belted a 2-run dinger, which proved to be the single biggest swing for the Reds on the night, and he later added both a walk and a sac-fly. That leaves him with a team-best 17 ribbies so far on the season despite missing dang near half the season with a busted thumb, which is telling in its own right. Congrats, Geno, and here’s to it keeping up healthily for the next, I...

The Reds led twice. The Reds also lost, again.

The Reds led twice. The Reds also lost, again.

Such is life. The Joe Nuxhall Memorial Honorary Star of the Game Eugenio Suarez wasted little time shrugging off his busted thumb, and has returned to the Cincinnati Reds lineup as the right-handed thumper we’d all hoped he’d be this year. Suarez had yet another great night at the plate on Monday against the Milwaukee Brewers, as he singled, doubled, and drove in 4 runs in the process. With Devin Mesoraco now a backup and Adam Duvall struggling mightily, Suarez becomes the go-to thumping RH bat in the Cincinnati lineup, and it’s great to see that he’s swinging healthy again so...

Mahle throws darts again, Reds defeat Twins 8-2

On Sunday, April 29, in their 28th game of the 2018 season, the Cincinnati Reds clinched their first series win of the season with a 8-2 win over the Minnesota Twins in Minnesota. The win came two days after the team’s 15-run, 20-hit outburst on Friday, and gave the Reds four wins in their last seven games after winning just three of their first 21. This was a good week. Joey Votto homered in four straight games, Tyler Mahle posted two terrific starts, Jose Peraza and Alex Blandino both built substantial hitting streaks, and Scott Schebler and Eugenio Suarez both returned to the lineup...
