Giants’ Brandon Belt criticizes umpire after loss to Reds

Brandon Belt has been on fire at the plate. He homered in all three games of a series against the Reds at AT&T Park that started with two Giants wins and ended Wednesday with a 6-3 Reds victory. Belt’s strike-zone awareness has been off the charts, a huge reason he will take a .301 average into Thursday night’s series opener against the Rockies. When Wednesday’s loss ended with Belt looking at a full-count third strike from Rafael Iglesias, leaving Brandon Crawford at first base and Evan Longoria on deck, Belt was not happy.

Rays recall Christian Arroyo, place Carlos Gomez on the DL

The Christian Arroyo era in Tampa Bay is set to begin The Tampa Bay Rays have placed outfielder, Carlos Gomez, on the 10-day disabled list with a groin strain and selected infielder, Christian Arroyo, from Triple-A Durham. Arroyo was the prize of the Evan Longoria blockbuster this past winter. The former Giants top prospect spent with the spring with the Rays before being optioned to Triple-A. The 25th overall selection in the 2013 draft, Arroyo rose quickly though the Giants system and made his major league debut this past season. He played in 34 games for San Francisco in 2017 and hit...

Evan Longoria believes Rays should consider bolting Tampa Bay area

The Rays have been searching for a new ballpark site for years, and most agree a ballpark in Tampa, Fla., instead of the current home in St. Petersburg is the way to go. But former Rays third baseman Evan Longoria told the Tampa Bay Times it’s time to consider a third option. "Honestly, and this...

Tampa Bay Rays: Evan Longoria suggests move might happen

The continuing stalemate between the Tampa Bay Rays and St. Petersburg officials has reached the point where former team star Evan Longoria warns of a move. The Tampa Bay Rays for years have been stuck with a terrible lease for Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg including those where Evan Longoria starred. Counterpoint: Evan Longoria’s opinions about the Rays are still relevant

Evan Longoria was recently interviewed by Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times on two topics: The Rays Rebuild and The Rays Stadium Search. In both cases, Longoria’s perspective mirrors that of much of the general public: Tampa Bay is clearly in a rebuild, and though Longoria was personally treated well through that process, it’s not easy for those who care about the team to experience. The Rays attendance problem is real, and one has to wonder if Miami’s failure to rebound its attendance through a new stadium is a cautionary tale. When anyone could offer these comments, why is...

Evan Longoria’s opinion about the Rays doesn’t matter

Harsh but true: he doesn’t get a say anymore. Evan Longoria spent ten years — some of them the best of his career — with the Tampa Bay Rays, and when he was traded, he remained vocally supportive of the team where he’d begun his baseball journey. There were, it seemed, no hard feelings about the split. Everything was as amicable as could be expected. Now that he’s spent a quarter of a season with the San Francisco Giants, his tune about his old franchise has changed slightly. In a recent interview with Tampa Bay Times reporter Marc Topkin, Longoria was candid in his opinions...

Philadelphia farm system doing it's part now, but it needs to continue for Phillies to become dominant

Seranthony Dominguez tossed a flawless inning on Monday night in his major league debut to become the latest highly touted prospect to make his mark in Philadelphia. The 23-year-old even collected a strikeout, sitting down Evan Longoria after falling behind 2-0 before battling back and getting a called third strike on a slider up and over the plate. Dominguez has the stuff to be a dominant arm in the later innings. In fact, he'll probably have the opportunity to close out a few games before the year is out, but his arrival also signifies the beginning of the end of major league prospects the...

Giants’ Williamson not returning soon, likely destined for AAA rehab

ATLANTA - It’s the Willie Mays 87th-birthday edition of the pregame Giants notes. Happy birthday, Willie. The Giants are bidding for their first sweep in Atlanta since 2014 at Turner Field. The two starters, Andrew Suarez and Mike Soroka, own three big-league starts between them. The difference is, Suarez is 25 and Soroka is 20. Buster Posey and Evan Longoria get the day off. Ronald Acuña Jr. does not. The 20-year-old will be back at it hope to end the worst luck a guy can have in two games. Acuña is 0-for-8 despite hitting four balls...

Nick Hundley’s pinch-hit single propels Giants past Padres

Of course, Evan Longoria scored the winning run. That’s how baseball works on a night when the three-time Gold Glove winner had a multi-error game for the first time since Sept. 27, 2013. Nick Hundley’s pinch-hit single in the bottom of the ninth inning scored Buster Posey and Longoria, completing his redemption story in a 6-5 victory over the Padres on Monday night at AT&T Park. Austin Slater led off the ninth inning by getting hit by a pitch, moved to second on Posey’s two-out walk and scored on Longoria’s bloop single to left.

How are the ex-Rays faring this season?

How are the ex-Rays faring this season?

An excuse to see how Evan Longoria is doing We all knew the 2018 season would be a different one for the Rays as they underwent an offseason and spring training of change. Their reliance on the longball is a thing of the past as they have filled their lineup with contact oriented, highly defensive skilled ball players. During the offseason, they allowed Logan Morrison and Lucas Duda to walk away as free agents. They shocked the baseball world when they traded away the face of the franchise, Evan Longoria, to the San Francisco Giants. Then, at the onset of spring training, the Rays...

Giants beat Dodgers to capture third straight series, reach .500

Now don't go hating Dodgers manager Dave Roberts. What else is he supposed to say when asked about his team Sunday morning? "When it's all said and done, the Dodgers will be at the top of the division," Roberts said. Maybe so, but right now they are not even on top of the Giants, who reached .500 for the first time since April 12 when they beat the Dodgers 4-2 to win their third straight series. Evan Longoria stayed hot with a three-run homer in the first inning off Kenta Maeda and Ty Blach continued his ownership of the Dodgers by carrying a...
