Roberto Hernandez is doing something new

DRaysBay — After a disappointing series loss in Toronto, the Rays are coming home to host the Yankees, and Roberto Hernandez will get the start in game one tomorrow. I think that getting lost in his 5.24 ERA and the overall disappointing start to the season for Rays' pitching is the fact that Hernandez has been good. Like, not just "keeping a spot warm for Chris Archer, Alex Torres, or Jake Odorizzi good." More like "keeping Archer, Torres, and Odorizzi in Durham good." SIERA, my ERA estimator of choice, believes that out of starters to have pitched at least 40 innings, Roberto Hernandez has been...

It was the shortest outing of the season for Hernandez, who pitched at least six innings in six of his first seven starts. His next turn in the rotation comes Friday against the Yankees.

Roberto Hernandez has best outing with Rays

CBSSports.com Fantasy — Rays starter Roberto Hernandez, who had his last start wiped out by inclement weather, finished a strong outing Tuesday at home against Toronto. Unfortunately, the Rays' bullpen couldn't hold another lead. Hernandez needed 103 pitches to allow just one earned run on five hits and a walk over six solid innings, but he settled for a no-decision despite leaving the game with a 4-1 lead. He struck out seven and his only mistake was allowing a solo homer to Adam Lind in the second. His ERA is at 4.66. The 32-year-old had arguably his best outing with the Rays, as his record stands at 1-4. He's walk...

Roberto Hernandez needs to remain calm under pressure

CBSSports.com Fantasy — Rays starting pitcher Roberto Hernandez takes the hill Thursday at Kansas City having lost four of his first five starts. He allowed at least four runs for the fourth time in his last start Friday against the White Sox and manager Joe Maddon said the veteran right-hander needs to slow down on the hill. "When he's gotten hit a couple of times, he's speeding up a little bit, and the ball gets up in the zone," Maddon said, per MLB.com. "Because he has a tendency to want to over-boogie sometimes. To me, he's a classic example of a guy who could try easier, or try less, when it gets hotter. Don't t...

  • Roberto Hernandez can get better
No one ever says that Roberto Hernandez doesn't have good stuff. via pitchfx.texasleaguers.com That's a sinker and a four seam fastball that average 92 mph, a changeup at 85 mph, and a slider at 83 mph. The sinker is, obviosuly, one of the better groundball inducers in the game, and all discussions about Hernandez start there. But despite it's obvious quality, Hernandez's sinker has gotten hit and hit hard over his career. I asked our local Cleveland expert, Steve Kinsella, why: His poor performances seemed to be a result of a number of things cascading on him. He always has a lot o...
