Geovany Soto seals roster spot with strong throwing day

Newly minted White Sox backup catcher shuts down Dodgers running game Tuesday was the deadline for MLB teams to decide the fates of their veteran minor-league free agents, and the White Sox made Geovany Soto part of their plans. You could call it unofficially unlistedly official, since the Sox still have to make corresponding 40-man roster removals to make him and Matt Albers fit. The backup catcher job was Soto's the moment he signed his minor-league contract provided he stayed healthy. Even his injury-hampered post-peak track record easily exceeded the competition's. He hit .247/.320/.432...

Add Matt Albers, Geovany Soto to White Sox's roster

GLENDALE, Ariz. -- Add two more names to the Chicago White Sox’s Opening Day roster as the club confirmed Tuesday that both reliever Matt Albers and catcher Geovany Soto have been told they made the team. Manager Robin Ventura announced earlier Tuesday that J.B. Shuck made the roster as a backup outfielder. Only a select few roster decisions remain. Kyle Drabek, who was claimed off waivers by the White Sox this past weekend, is expected to make the club, but he only made his first appearance in a White Sox uniform Tuesday.

Pitchers Brad Penny and Jesse Crain are retained The fates of Geovany Soto, J.B. Shuck and Matt Albers were decided as they made the major league roster according to Yahoo! Sports' Jeff Passan. The best part of Soto's spring training is that he made it without getting injured. In just 28 at-bats, Soto batted .286/.444/.500 with a home run and five RBI. He's also tied with Adam Eaton with being walked eight times. Despite not being reliable health-wise and questionable defense, Soto is the best backup Tyler Flowers has had taking over the starting gig in 2013. It'll be interesting how...

White Sox, Blue Jays swap waiver claims

GENDALE, Ariz. -- In what essentially turns out to be a trade, the Chicago White Sox lost minor league first baseman Andy Wilkins to a waiver claim by the Toronto Blue Jays two days after the White Sox claimed pitcher Kyle Drabek from Toronto. With the White Sox needing room on their 40-man roster for potential additions such as Micah Johnson and Geovany Soto, the move to take Wilkins off the 40-man roster and try to slip him through waivers was not unexpected.
