Another Blown Call Costs The Rays A Run [PICTURE]

Rays Index — With one out in the second inning, Henry Blanco hit a ball into the leftfield corner. Sam Fuld made a strong throw back to the infield that appeared to easily beat Blanco to the bag. But after Ben Zobrist tagged Blanco, umpire CB Buckner inexplicably called Blanco safe. And it [...]

Mark Buehrle struggles again

CBSSports.com Fantasy — Toronto manager John Gibbons gave catcher Henry Blanco a start Monday in Tampa Bay to try something new for struggling starter Mark Buehrle, MLB.com reported before the game. It didn't work. Buehrle managed to avoid another loss as Toronto rallied to take a lead in the top of the ninth, but his ERA is 7.02. He did pitch five shutout innings, but was hit for seven runs in the third.  The Rays got an RBI single from Kelly Johnson, a grand slam from Evan Longoria and a two-run homer by Luke Scott. The Blue Jays' starter allowed nine hits and two walks over six innings and 107 pitches with five st...

Henry Blanco paired with struggling Mark Buehrle

CBSSports.com Fantasy — Blue Jays manager John Gibbons gave a rare start to veteran Henry Blanco behind the plate over J.P. Arencibia Monday with Mark Buehrle starting in Tampa Bay, MLB.com reports.  Gibbons would like to give Blanco a shot to help reverse Buehrle's struggles. Monday was the first time that Blanco caught anyone but R.A. Dickey this season.  "I just wanted to run one game like that and see," Gibbons said. "Mark, it has been a tough go for him, and we'll change up the catchers to see if that does anything. [J.P.'s] not happy, I didn't expect him to be. But it's just something I want to look at tonight....

Jays manager trying new approach with struggling veteran

CBSSports.com Fantasy — Success has eluded Blue Jays starting pitcher Mark Buehrle early on this season, as he heads into Monday's start at Tampa Bay with a 6.43 ERA and having allowed five or more runs in four of six starts. In an attempt to help Buehrle get on track, manager John Gibbons made the decison to have Henry Blanco catch the veteran left-hander Monday. "Just wanted to try it one game, see what happens," Gibbons said, per the Toronto Star. Gibbons added he made this decision on his own without input from Buehrle and he said starting catcher J.P. Arencibia was "not happy." Gibbons said he "didn't expect (Ar...

Henry Blanco auditioning for role of full-time knuckleball catcher

CBSSports.com Fantasy — Blue Jays catcher Henry Blanco is scheduled to start Sunday's game against the Red Sox with R.A. Dickey on the mound, and if he proves capable of handling Dickey's knuckleball, he could become Dickey's full-time catcher. "We'll see how that goes," manager John Gibbons told MLB.com. "That won't be the only factor, but if everything is real smooth and everything goes well, I'd be crazy not to." Blanco has yet to play in a regular-season game in 2013 after hitting .286/.333/.400 in 39 plate appearances during spring training.

Henry Blanco to catch R.A. Dickey next time

CBSSports.com Fantasy — The Blue Jays have decided to go with Henry Blanco behind the plate the next time R.A. Dickey takes the mound Monday against Boston, reports the National Post.  J.P. Arencibia was originally expected to get another crack at catching the knuckleballer but manager John Gibbons has decided to go with Blanco, who was brought in for the very purpose of handling the tough-to-catch 2012 National League Cy Young award winner.

J.P. Arencibia struggles catching R.A. Dickey

CBSSports.com Fantasy — Blue Jays catcher J.P. Arencibia had a tough task Tuesday in catching knuckleballer R.A. Dickey on opening day against the Indians. Toronto signed Henry Blanco for just this purpose, but manager John Gibbons proclaimed Arencibia fit to catch Dickey's starts. Tuesday's opener did not go well. Arencibia was charged with three passed balls over six innings and one of them led to an unearned run for the pitcher. Fotunately for Arencibia, Gibbons will continue to let him catch the National League Cy Young award winner from last season, the Toronto Sun reports. “Frustrating wouldn’t be the word for ...

J.P. Arencibia behind plate on opening night

CBSSports.com Fantasy — The Blue Jays will start J.P. Arencibia behind the dish on opening night, says manager John Gibbons, the National Post reports Monday.  The Jays optioned Josh Thole on Sunday and CBS Sports Baseball Insider Jon Heyman says Mike Nickeas won't make the team. Gibbons will have Arencibia and Henry Blanco handle the pitching staff, including R.A. Dickey all season. Both catchers will see time with Dickey on the mound, though Arencibia does start the first time around.  Nickeas hit just .226 this spring over 31 at-bats and will begin the year in the minors. Blanco, who should see plenty of at-bats d...
