Ian Stewart's future with Cubs uncertain

CBSSports.com Fantasy — Cubs general manager Jed Hoyer said he isn't sure if Ian Stewart will be part of the team's future plans, MLB.com reports. Stewart, who is no longer on the 40-man roster after being designated for assignment, is just 4 for 46 at the plate over 15 games for Triple-A Iowa and is listed behind Josh Vetters at third base on the Iowa depth chart. "I'm not sure,” Hoyer said. “I hope there is. I do think there’s a lot of talent there. It’s been an unfortunate run with the injuries. He’s a left-handed hitter with power who plays good defense. I hope there’s a future here but at this point, it’s going ...

Valbuena proving he can handle third

Chicago Cubs Blog | ESPN Chicago — The Chicago Cubs spent the entire offseason looking for a young third baseman they could project for the future. Failing to acquire the prime player they were looking for, the front office signed Ian Stewart to a one-year $1.5 million contract. While Stewart has been hobbled by injuries, Luis Valbuena has laid claim to the position. The 27-year-old Venezuelan native has been an early season surprise to some. “He is an everyday player,” Cubs manager Dale Sveum said.

Stewart takes surprise break from I-Cubs

Chicago Cubs Blog | ESPN Chicago — CHICAGO -- It’s raising some eyebrows that recently optioned Chicago Cubs third baseman Ian Stewart hasn’t reported to Triple-A Iowa just yet even though he’d been playing there for the last 13 games. Stewart just finished a rehab assignment with the Iowa Cubs for a left quad injury that has plagued him since early in spring training. The maximum time a player can spend in the minors in that situation is 20 days, making last Friday his final day of rehabbing.

Luis Valbuena, Cody Ransom have third base covered

Chicago Sun-Times — Third basemen Luis Valbuena and Cody Ransom , surprisingly, are among the better hot-corner duos in baseball, hitting a combined .267 (27-for-101) with eight home runs and 17 RBI. And that’s why Ian Stewart is a minor-leaguer. “He’s [at Class AAA Iowa] as a Triple-A player now,’’ manager Dale Sveum said of Stewart, who was activated from the disabled list Friday but optioned to Iowa. “Ransom and Valbuena are our third basemen now.’’ Sveum called the left-handed-hitting Valbuena and the right-handed-hitting Ransom ‘‘one...

Chicago Cubs Blog | ESPN Chicago — CHICAGO – A day after Ian Stewart was optioned to Triple-A Iowa, Chicago Cubs manager Dale Sveum made it clear that Cody Ransom and Luis Valbuena do not need to be looking over their shoulders. “(Stewart) is down there as a Triple-a player now,” Sveum told reporters before Saturday’s game. “Valbuena and Ransom are our third basemen. That’s the way it is now.” Stewart has spent most of the last two seasons in the Cubs organization dealing with injuries.

Cubs Option Ian Stewart to AAA

The Cub Reporter — The Cubs have reinstated 3B Ian Stewart from the 15-day DL and optioned him to AAA Iowa. (Stewart came into the 2013 season with one minor league option year left). Stewart suffered a strained quad in an intrasquad game at HoHoKam Park in February, and missed the entire 2013 MLB Cactus League Spring Training schedule. He was placed on the Cubs MLB 15-day Disabled List on March 31st (retro to 3/22), and was left behind at Extended Spring Training when the Cubs left Arizona at the end of March. Stewart hit 200/250/267 in 16 PA at Extended Spring Training, and then was moved up to AAA Iowa on Ap...

Ian Stewart to remain in minors

CBSSports.com Fantasy — Cubs president of baseball operations Theo Epstein told MLB.com on Wednesday that Ian Stewart could be recertified to remain in his rehab assignment with Triple-A Iowa. Players are limited to 20 days per rehab assignment. While Stewart's time expires on Friday, Epstein said that's a "soft deadline.""He's had bumps and bruises along the way, getting hit by a pitch, and having some soreness," Epstein said of Stewart. Injured Ian Stewart not focused on numbers

CBSSports.com Fantasy — Cubs third baseman Ian Stewart, on the 15-day disabled list, told the Des Moines Register Tuesday that he does not feel ready to join the major-league club and continues to recover from a left quadricep injury. But he added that he is not far off."Maybe three more games, hopefully that’ll be enough to get me ready," he said. Stewart is 4 for 40 (.100) with four RBI and 15 strikeouts on his rehab assignment. "Obviously, the numbers aren’t there for me," he said. "For me, it’s not so much about getting base hits every time I go up. With a rehab assignment, I’m more about just feeling comfortable...
