Game #48 Preview: Richards vs Happ

Angels (26-21) vs Blue Jays (22-25) The Blue Jays welcome Mike Trout and Angels into town for a 3 game series, starting tonight at 7:07 ET. Blue Jays’ Starter J.A. Happ starts game 1 for the Jays. Through his first 9 starts, Happ is 5-3 with a 4.15 ERA. After a pair of rough outings, Happ rebounded in his last start against the Mets, throwing 7 shutout innings allowing 2 hits while striking out 10. It was the third time this season that Happ has struck out at least 9 batters while walking none. Happ’s ability to generate strikeouts this season has been impressive. His 11.42 K/9 is 6th...

Blue Jays in desperate need of a rotation shake-up

The Toronto Blue Jays require a rotation shake-up and they need it soon, the entire starting staff with the exception of J.A. Happ could all warrant pitching in Buffalo if you looked solely on their individual stats. J.A. Happ has been the rotations best starter and he even sports an earned run average north of four. Great game for J.A. Happ, Jays win

Great game for J.A. Happ, Jays win

Happ pitches 7 shutout innings, and gets 2 hits and a walk. Blue Jays 12 Mets 1 Winning in the rain. We are winning in the rain. What a glorious feeling, I'm happy today. J.A. Happ was terrific. He pitched 7 innings, and allowed just 2 hits, with 10 strikeouts. Considering he had two hits, a walk and two runs scored, it’s a pretty nice day. I thought Happ was benefitting from a fairly large strike zone, especially early in the game, when umpire Nic Lentz wanted to be sure to get through 5 innings. Aaron Loup pitched the 8th and Danny Barnes the 9th (with the rain coming down hard again),...

Game #43 Preview: Happ vs Wheeler

Blue Jays (21-21) vs Mets (20-18) After an ugly, terrible, not good game last night, the Blue Jays go for the 2 game split this afternoon. Today’s game starts at 1:10 ET, so don’t tune in this evening and be sad. Blue Jays’ Starter J.A. Happ is making his 9th start of the season. Through his first 8, he’s 4-3 with a 4.80 ERA. His season looked so much better 2 weeks ago, when he was 4-1 with a 3.50 ERA. But the month has turned to May, and he has allowed 10 runs in his 9 innings, striking out only 6 and walking 6, while watching 3 long balls fly over the fence. His last start...

Terrible start from Happ, Jays lose

Terrible start from Happ, Jays lose

Mariners 9 Blue Jays 3 In a run of crappy starts, that one was as crappy as any. We had the J.A. Happ I came to hate, back in his first stint with the Jays. Lots of nibbling and working his way to full counts. He gave up a grand slam in the first inning. 000 Happ fought through 3.1 innings, allowed 10 hits, 7 earned, 2 walks, 3 strikeouts and 2 home runs. He just didn’t have it. It was his first start this year with less than 5 strikeouts. It was also his first start of the season with less strikeouts than innings pitched. Entering the game with a 3.67 ERA, he left the game with a 4.80...

5/10/18: Open Game Thread

facing a friend turned foe To conclude this three-game set, the Mariners square off against old friend(?) J.A. Happ. Happ, as you might recall, was acquired in the 2015 offseason for precisely one Condor, triggering a moderate meLLtdown. While Michael Saunders was hurt for much of 2015, Happ was mediocre incarnate, and was dealt to the Pirates for Adrian Sampson at the deadline. Of course, THEY ALWAYS GET BETTER WHEN THEY LEAVE, and Happ dominated under the tutelage of Ray Searage, running a 2.19 FIP through 63.1 innings down the stretch. While he parlayed that into a three-year deal with...

Mariners (20-15) vs Blue Jays (20-17) After a come from behind win last night, the Blue Jays go for the series win against the Mariners tonight. The game starts at 7:07 ET. Blue Jays’ Starter J.A. Happ is making his 8th start of the season tonight. Through his first 7, he is 4-2 with a 3.67 ERA, easily our best starter to start the season. He is getting strikeouts at a career high rate, while limiting walks to a career low, but still being bit by the home run ball. As a result, his xFIP, which normalizes regular FIP with a league average HR/FB rate, is at an impressive 3.02. Happ’s...

Blue Jays Opposing Pitcher Preview: Mike Leake

Thursday, May 10, the Blue Jays are tasked with beating Mike Leake of the Seattle Mariners. J.A. Happ, the only consistent starter for the Blue Jays it seems, will be tasked with shutting down the Mariners offence. Mike Leake has not had a good start to the year. Blue Jays (18-14) vs Rays (13-16) After a brutally long day that was originally supposed to be an off day in which we were treated to 8 hours of baseball plus a win and a loss, the Blue Jays head on down to Tampa to take on a rested Rays team. The first game of the 3 game set starts tonight at 7:10 ET. Blue Jays’ Starter J.A. Happ is making his 7th start of the season, and he has looked really good early on. Through 36 innings, he’s 4-1 with a 3.50 ERA, striking out an incredible 50 while walking just 7. He is coming off back to back starts of 7+ innings with 9+ strikeouts and 0 walks -...

Jays win one! Great start from Happ

Jays win one! Great start from Happ

Three homers and some good pitching and defense. Rangers 2 Blue Jays 7 Nice to see good offense, defense and pitching all in one game again. When we needed innings from J.A. Happ, he went 7 innings. Early in the game it didn’t look like he would make it through 5, he was going full count on everyone, but he smartened up and started challenging guys. He ended up allowing 5 hits, no walks, with 9 strikeouts. He did give up a Rafael Nunez home run, but he looked very good out there. Ryan Tepera pitched the 8 and Aaron Loup the 9th. Loup gave up a double off the wall in left, on which...

Blue Jays’ Starter Early season strikeout factory J.A. Happ gets the start for the Jays. Happ has struck out 41 in his 29 innings of work, giving him a K/9 of 12.72. That places him third in all of baseball, sandwiched between Max Scherzer and Gerrit Cole. On the season, Happ is 3-1 with a 3.72 ERA. His 3.63 FIP is easily the best in the struggling Blue Jays’ rotation. Rangers’ Starter Martin Perez is making his 5th start of the...
