Jacob deGrom has strep throat, start pushed back to Saturday

Jason Vargas will now pitch on Friday in St. Louis in his original rotation spot. After this afternoon’s game, it was reported that Jacob deGrom has been suffering from strep throat, the latest Met to fall victim to illness this season. Seth Lugo, Justin Wilson, and Brandon Nimmo had all been feeling under the weather at various points over the past few weeks, although it’s not clear if those incidents are related. deGrom has been taking antibiotics and it’s unclear how long he’s been dealing with the illness. Player Meter: Pitchers, April 8-14

A quick review of how the Mets’ pitchers fared over the past week. Frankly, it hasn’t been a good week for Mets pitching. Jacob deGrom had his worst week since 2017. Jason Vargas didn’t make it out of the first inning and Corey Oswalt followed him with a poor performance of his own. The rest of the starting rotation fared much better, but the bullpen remains an issue, despite bounce back weeks from Seth Lugo and Robert Gsellman. Let’s start with the bad and the ugly this week. Jason Vargas had one relief appearance and one start this week. Both were disastrous....
