Game Thread 8/14: Red Sox at Phillies

They meet again. Tonight, the Phillies face the enormous, chainsaw-handed behemoth of the American League. The Boston Red Sox have come to town, and the only way out is through. Last time, they faced Aaron Nola and Jake Arrieta. Let’s see who’s taking the mound this time. Big series with Boston starts tonight. Here's our lineup. #BeBold : @NBCSPhilly, @YouTubeTV : @SportsRadioWIP : https://t.co/Ew4NQuHHkN pic.twitter.com/oue0YqHWTQ— Philadelphia Phillies (@Phillies) August 14, 2018 Well okay then! That’s, uh, Nick Pivetta! I’m not going to shit on Nick Pivetta here....

Nightmare at Petco 2 - Freddy’s Revenge: Padres 9, Phillies 3

Freddy Galvis led the way as the last place Padres took the series from the Phillies A series against the last place Padres was supposed to be a boon for the Phillies’ postseason chances. Three games against rookie starting pitchers backed by a weak lineup was supposed to provide the Phillies with an easy opportunity to pick up three wins, two at the absolute minimum. Friday’s loss was disheartening, but after Aaron Nola pitched the team to victory on Saturday, the Phillies seemed poised to win the series behind Jake Arrieta on Sunday. Instead, the team failed in just about every aspect...

Game Thread 8/12: Phillies at Padres

A nice thing about Aaron Nola starts is that they are followed by a Jake Arrieta start. Arrieta’s coming off eight great innings off against the Diamondbacks, a game in which the bullpen blew the win in the 14th inning. Getting a start that is at the very least a less gut-punching win and at the very most an actual win would be an improvement, but what else is Arrieta supposed to do? Pitch even longer than eight innings so that the bullpen doesn’t become a factor? Yes. Please do that, if you like it.

Phillies: Jake Arrieta a top tier pitcher this season, with one exception

Phillies pitching has received plenty of recognition in the Cy Young conversation, but has it been about the right guy? I am not a huge fan of the win statistic for a pitcher. You could throw five eight-run innings and receive a “win” one day, but the next outing you could throw a no-hitter with […] Phillies: Jake Arrieta a top tier pitcher this season, with one exception - That Balls Outta Here - That Balls Outta Here - A Philadelphia Phillies Fan Site - News, Blogs, Opinion and More

That’s More Like It: Phillies 5, D-Bax 2

One night after playing 1.5 games, the Phillies needed just one to even the series in Sunland. Phoenix is a wonderful place. In January. I happened to be there for New Year’s this year, and it was a very pleasant 60 degrees most of the time and the people we were staying with constantly fretted that we’d freeze and please put on a jacket. Today is not January, and it was a hellscapish 108 earlier today. Why is there a city there. Nick Pivetta followed up Jake Arrieta’s gem from earlier today with one of his own, pitching six scoreless against the Diamondbacks. He allowed five hits...

Phillies Fall to D-Backs 3-2: Gabe Kapler’s Only Flaw

Did the Phillies make a mistake by taking Jake Arrieta out last night? On Monday night, the Philadelphia Phillies began a six-game road trip in Phoenix against the now-NL West-leading Arizona Diamondbacks. It was everything a fan like me could have asked for – a well-pitched, fast-paced 2-0 game headed to the bottom of the […] Phillies Fall to D-Backs 3-2: Gabe Kapler’s Only Flaw - That Balls Outta Here - That Balls Outta Here - A Philadelphia Phillies Fan Site - News, Blogs, Opinion and More

Snake Bytes 8/7: Freight Trained Off

Arizona had to wait Jake Arrieta out of this game to secure a victory after 14 innings. Arizona Diamondbacks 3, Philadelphia Phillies 2 Once again on a Monday night after a long extra inning affair, Snake Bytes was finished long before the game and any recaps. Zack Godley went toe to toe with Jake Arrieta, the latter who was slightly better after eight innings. Each man combined to allow eight hits and three walks over 15 1⁄3 innings. The first half of the game zipped by, Godley allowing the only two runs in the game in the 7th inning. Philadelphia carried that two run lead into the...

Gem by Arrieta coughed up by Dominguez in ninth; Phils fall in 14

Seranthony Dominquez blew his second save opportunity in as many days on Monday night as the Diamondbacks triumphed over the Phillies at Chase Field in 14 innings, 3-2.The loss snapped a six-game winning streak for the Phillies and wasted an outstanding effort from starter Jake Arrieta who tossed eight scoreless innings. After an outstanding start to his big league career, Dominguez has struggled as of late. He is 0-1 with a 7.11 ERA over his last seven appearances, issuing seven walks and surrendering six hits over 6 1/3 innings. Ahead 2-0 in the ninth, Dominguez surrendered a solo-shot to...

Arizona Diamondbacks 3, Philadelphia Phillies 2: David Peralta, We are Not Worthy

A rather uneventful night turned into an amazing ballgame After jumping back into first place, the Diamondbacks fought hard but ended up losing to the NL East leading Philadelphia Phillies. A pitcher’s duel between Jake Arrieta and Zack Godley with the former getting the upper hand as a bad seventh inning spelled doom for the team. However, a hard fought game ended in a W for the Snakes. This game was an utter snooze-fest (until the end), unless you’re into pitcher’s duels. Which this recapper is. Arrieta was dominant posting an 8-inning scoreless affair while adding 4 strikeouts on 2...

The Search For More Innings: Win Or Lose: Phillies 2, D-Bax 2

Can you prove this game didn’t last forever? I can’t. This game was a doozy. But before things went off the rails, it was pretty good. First, we learned that D-Backs’ starter, Zack Godley—because you know, Zacks and snakes, that whole connection there—is an avid outdoorsman. Now, I don’t know how one can be an outdoorsman in Phoenix, but apparently he is. He loves fishing, and, as Scott Franzke related, has only sunk two boats. I must not be a great fisherman because I’ve never sunk any boats. Jake Arrieta pitched eight scoreless innings, allowing the Phils to take a 2-0...

Game Thread 8/6: Phillies at Diamondbacks

The Phillies didn’t lose when Jake Arrieta pitched in July. Here’s hoping August is very July-like. Jake Arrieta is the only member of the Phillies rotation that didn’t take part in their four-game sweep of the Marlins that was completed Sunday afternoon. Now, away from their home park (where they’re 38-18) and a weekend full of feelings, the Phillies head out on the road (where they’re 25-30) to the desert, where Arrieta will face the Diamondbacks in some late night*, west coast baseball. Arrieta has a 3.51 career ERA at Chase Field, which is among the perfectly serviceable,...

Pomeranz OK, but Arrieta better

Drew Pomeranz was serviceable over five innings, allowing two runs despite putting 10 men on base, but the Red Sox couldn’t solve former Cy Young winner Jake Arrieta last night.Arrieta tossed seven innings of one-run ball and the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Red Sox, 3-1, to split the two-game series.Pomeranz was getting hit hard by the Phillies, but a lot of the line drives found gloves and he avoided giving up any homers over his 95 pitches, 50 of which were strikes. He walked four and hit two batters.“It’s no mystery something has been off this year from last year and the last...
