Even in defeat, Arrieta shows maturity

CHICAGO -- After nearly every outing this season, Chicago Cubs starting pitcher Jake Arrieta shows a little bit more maturity as he continues to grow into one of the better pitchers in the game. Arrieta struggled early in Saturday's 6-3 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals, allowing the first two batters he faced to reach before giving up a one-out, two-run double to the scorching-hot Matt Adams. Despite the rough start, Arrieta was able to bounce back and deliver six strong innings, striking out six and walking only one, while giving up only the two runs and five hits.

Trade leaves Arrieta in stopper role

PHOENIX -- If the Chicago Cubs are going to avoid a sweep and win the final game of this three-game series against the Arizona Diamondbacks on Sunday, they will need another quality start from starting pitcher Jake Arrieta. Strong performances have become commonplace for the Cubs right hander as he continues his renaissance season, however the importance of him doing so has grown during the last couple of weeks. When the season began, Arrieta was one of three veteran starters who shared the workload of carrying the starting rotation.

Jake Arrieta eager to keep plugging

CINCINNATI — If the Cubs wonder where they will find front-line pitching after trading their two best pitchers, Jake Arrieta has a thought: “I intend to pitch like an ace regardless of the situation,” said the Cubs starter who has pitched well enough since returning from an early-season injury to arguably qualify as an All-Star snub. “I used to say that a lot when I was younger and I got a lot of [heat] for it, but I truly feel in my heart that’s who I am...

Zimmermann outduels Arrieta as Nationals clip Cubs

WASHINGTON — Jake Arrieta appears to be maturing into the kind of pitcher the Chicago Cubs hope can solidify their rotation weakened by the trade of starters Jeff Samardzija and Jason Hammel. Though the Cubs lost 2-1 to the Washington Nationals on Sunday, Arrieta followed up two sensational outings with a gritty effort for a suddenly short-handed staff. He allowed one run in six innings of a no-decision. “It was a dogfight,” Arrieta said. “I really had to...
