  • Angels 6, White Sox 2: Jake Peavy loses command, Sox settle for split
On a beautiful Sunday afternoon that doubled as a getaway day, John Hirschbeck brought a wide strike zone to speed up affairs. That Jake Peavy still walked a season-high five batters underscores just how off he was. Peavy lost the strike zone in the third and fourth innings. The Angels took advantage of it for a pair of 2's, and they wouldn't need anything more. It started with a dreaded leadoff walk to Chris Iannetta (his fifth consecutive walk). J.B. Shuck singled him over to third, and Erick Aybar drove them both in with a double to the right-field corner. Aybar helped Peavy get bac...

  • Terrerobytes: The short-lived afterglow of Chris Sale's one-hitter
It's a shame Chris Sale can't pitch every other day, because he's one of the few players on the White Sox who commands the non-Sox world's attention. Not all of it was good -- see the previous post -- but that was just one of three FanGraphs posts about the Sox on Monday. Likewise, Buster Olney devoted just about his entire Baseball Tonight podcast to interviews with Sale, Jake Peavy and Don Cooper. All three are good interviews, but the segment with Peavy has the most to offer, because he goes into detail about his surgery and the mechanical problems that preceded it. I'm glad Peavy h...

  • White Sox 6, Mets 3: Dormant offense comes to life for Peavy's return
Simply disgusted with the White Sox scoreless ten innings last night, Alejandro De Aza began today's game with a line drive home run to right. Hawk giggled. And Jake Peavy took the mound for his first start since April 26th, with a lead under his belt. In the bottom of the 2nd inning, the Mets' Lucas Duda answered with his own lead-off blast to the upper deck in right field; and when Peavy walked Mike Baxter an out later, the feelings of doom and gloom lingered ever-so-slightly and ever-so-temporarily. The next batter Ike Davis hit a ball to deep center field and Dewayne Wise tracke...
  • White Sox 3, Rangers 1: Hector Santiago, Tyler Flowers team up to top Texas
With Jake Peavy suffering from back spasms, Hector Santiago joined the rotation a day earlier than expected. The White Sox didn't suffer much of a drop-off in the rotation. Better yet, Tyler Flowers made up the difference by providing a big net positive in the catcher-production department. Flowers' big swing on Justin Grimm's big, fat hanging curveball provided all the runs the Sox would score, and Santiago and the bullpen had enough in the tank make it hold up. The result: The Sox's first series victory since April 5-7 against Seattle. If Santiago's rebirth as a starter began in earn...
  • White Sox 5, Rays 4: Three homers extend streak to three
Say what you will about The Will To Win, but the White Sox aren't letting Hawk Harrelson down yet. The Sox used the long ball to bail out Jake Peavy from a 3-0 hole, and Addison Reed survived a greased-tee ending to seal their first three-game winning streak of the season. With a stiff wind blowing out to right, long balls were the story of the game. Jake Peavy gave up a couple in that direction, including one off the bat of Evan Longoria that looked like a deep flyout off the bat in the fourth inning. Kelly Johnson added an RBI single after that for a 3-0 Tampa Bay lead, and it looked...
