Chicago Cubs: Brandon Morrow, Jason Heyward come up big

Sometimes, the little things are all that count. Jason Heyward came up with a big swing and Brandon Morrow got the save to lead to Chicago Cubs to a possible sweep. Admit it. You had to be a little scared. Brandon Morrow hadn’t pitched for the Chicago Cubs in almost a week, and you know you […] Chicago Cubs: Brandon Morrow, Jason Heyward come up big - Cubbies Crib - Cubbies Crib - A Chicago Cubs Fan Site - News, Blogs, Opinion and More

Smoltz said it AGAIN. I’m teed off. Dark gods, I hate that ‘word’. I agree with the tweet below: #Cubs John Smoltz gives us an "irregardless." THAT is the unforgivable sin for me...— Scott Lindholm (@ScottLindholm) June 17, 2018 Jason Heyward looks like the real thing though. Just the way it should be. Addison...

He’s Freddie Freeman, and he’s the franchise foundation

We first came to know him as the (slightly) lesser half of a tandem. Freddie Freeman had been the Atlanta Braves’ second pick in the 2007 draft; Jason Heyward had been the first. They would become minor-league roommates.

Chicago Cubs: Resurgent Jason Heyward is bad news for Ian Happ

Like Dunk-a-roos cookies in the ’90s, Jason Heyward’s bat has shown up out of nowhere, much to our delight. While great for the Chicago Cubs, it’s Bad News Bears for Ian Happ. After signing the richest contract in Chicago Cubs history ahead of the 2016 season, Jason Heyward failed to provide even a modicum of support […] Chicago Cubs: Resurgent Jason Heyward is bad news for Ian Happ - Cubbies Crib - Cubbies Crib - A Chicago Cubs Fan Site - News, Blogs, Opinion and More

A look at Jason Heyward and whether his offensive improvement is sustainable

A look at Jason Heyward and whether his offensive improvement is sustainable

The Cubs’ 2016 acquisition looks like a new man. Jason Heyward was almost my April player to watch. The peripherals looked so good, but I got gun shy. Plus, as I was digging into the numbers Kyle Schwarber’s hot start looked a lot more defensible, and so I decided to just keep an eye on Heyward. Well, since coming off the disabled list on May 18 Heyward has been on fire. And it’s a lot more than just a few key hits, but I’m sure no one will mind if I start with a couple of web gems. I’m not sure what is more impressive honestly, the walkoff grand slam Heyward hit against Adam...

Cubs Stock Market Report: Week 11

Cubs Stock Market Report: Week 11

Who’s hot and who’s not for the Cubs. It was a bad week for the Kyles. A lack of offense didn’t help the Stock Market Report, either. Blue Chip Stocks: Jason Heyward: J-Hey’s turn around showed no signs of slowing down this week, as he went 7-for-19 with three doubles and a grand slam. Heyward’s walk-off grand slam sent chills down my spine when I saw it. The first thing that ran through my head was this moment from one of my favorite movies. Someone who has seemingly been one of the main scapegoats for this team’s offensive struggles over the past two seasons is finally...

Chicago Cubs vs. Pittsburgh Pirates preview, Sunday 6/10, 1:20 CT

Chicago Cubs vs. Pittsburgh Pirates preview, Sunday 6/10, 1:20 CT

The Cubs go for both a sweep of the Bucs and their fifth straight win. I suppose I should make this a semi-permanent feature of game previews here: This has been one of the wettest springs/early summers on record in Chicago, the wettest May continuing as we begin June. Hopefully, we’ll get this one in, then the Cubs won’t have to worry about rain the next three days at Miller Park. Sunday notes: The Cubs had doubles Saturday from Jason Heyward and Albert Almora Jr. That gave them 94 consecutive regular-season games with at least one extra-base hit. That tied the franchise’s longest...

2018 Cubs Heroes and Goats: Game 61

2018 Cubs Heroes and Goats: Game 61

Cubs pitching dominates, Cubs win with an assist from Mother Nature. Throughout the Chicago area yesterday started out as a soggy day before the sun came out and a beautiful day emerged. All of that rain lead to a gift double for the Cubs in the first inning when Starling Marte was tracking a Jason Heyward fly ball into the left-center gap and slipped and fell. The Cubs parlayed that into two runs in the first inning. Heyward looks the part right now of a confident hitter and a strong contributor at the plate for the Cubs. It is phenomenal what a little bit of confidence can do for a player...

Cubs 2, Pirates 0: Jon Lester, two relievers combine on one-hitter

Cubs 2, Pirates 0: Jon Lester, two relievers combine on one-hitter

The Cubs rode outstanding pitching and defense to their fourth straight win. The Cubs scored two runs on the first six pitches thrown to them by Pirates righthander Nick Kingham. Kris Bryant was hit by Kingham’s second pitch. Jason Heyward hit the third pitch from Kingham for a bizarre double that looked like a routine fly ball until Starling Marte just slipped and fell [VIDEO], and Kingham’s fourth offering was a grounder to first that scored Bryant and put Heyward on third. Two pitches later, Anthony Rizzo hit a sacrifice fly that scored Heyward for a 2-0 lead. And Jon Lester, Justin...

Chicago Cubs vs. Pittsburgh Pirates preview, Saturday 6/9, 1:20 CT

Chicago Cubs vs. Pittsburgh Pirates preview, Saturday 6/9, 1:20 CT

The Cubs are looking for their fourth win in a row. Once again, you will need this today: There’s supposed to be enough of a window to get this game in, though. Notes: Over his last nine games, Jason Heyward is hitting .400/.415/550 (16-for-40) with three doubles, a home run, six RBI and only three strikeouts. Walk watch: The Cubs have 236 walks so far this year. That leads the National League (despite the Cubs having played the fewest games of anyone in the league). It’s 3.93 walks per game, a pace for 637. Run-scoring watch: The Cubs have scored 308 runs, second in the league to the...

Chicago Cubs: Is this the 2018 Cubs team we’ve been waiting for?

The Chicago Cubs first third of the season came up short of expectations. But after winning 10 of their last 12 and enjoying a brief taste of first place Friday afternoon, is this what fans should expect going forward? The Chicago Cubs are hot. Red hot. Perhaps the hottest team in MLB hot. FanPost Friday: Rank your local bullpen members

FanPost Friday: Rank your local bullpen members

It’s been interesting so far. How much do you trust each guy? So far this year, the Phillies have had what we at The Good Phight are choosing to refer to as “gut punch losses” - the kind where victory is so close, yet is snatched away by poor baserunning, managerial goofs, or bullpen issues. The latest came Wednesday night when Adam Morgan gave up a walk off grand slam to Jason Heyward that caused a Phillies loss, 7-5 (recap here). It’s these types of losses that hurt the most, as they were this close to scratching out a victory in a place that hasn’t been too friendly to them of...

2018 MLB Draft review: Unpacking the Cubs draft

2018 MLB Draft review: Unpacking the Cubs draft

Some thoughts on the draft and what’s next for the system. What a week. Jason Heyward hits a walkoff grand slam. South Bend tosses a combined no-hitter. The four full-season affiliates swept to wins. Some good things happened with the Dominican affiliates. Another successful draft has been completed. And I fell asleep early. This column is about me unpacking from the draft and where the affiliates are now. Tennessee has been “a bit over .500” much of the season. Much of their success has been pitching-based. Trevor Clifton pushed for an early-June promotion to Triple-A Iowa. Clifton,...

Chicago Cubs: Jason Heyward stays hot with game-winning grand slam

This one’s for all the haters out there. Jason Heyward continued his recent hot streak, lifting the Chicago Cubs to a big win on Wednesday night. If I were to sum up Jason Heyward’s ninth-inning heroics Wednesday night in one word? Vindication. For pretty much all of his two-plus years in Chicago, fans have chastised […] Chicago Cubs: Jason Heyward stays hot with game-winning grand slam - Cubbies Crib - Cubbies Crib - A Chicago Cubs Fan Site - News, Blogs, Opinion and More
