Cubs Stock Market Report: The one-quarter mark

Cubs Stock Market Report: The one-quarter mark

Who’s hot? Who’s not? Here are the answers. Must-Buy Stocks: Ian Happ: Ian Happ has quickly become one of the most productive members on this Cubs team in the month of May. Over the past week at the plate, Happ went 6-for-15 with two doubles, a triple, two home runs, and three runs batted in. What’s more impressive, however, is that fact that he walked nine times (!!). This culminated in a .400/.640/1.067 line on the week, good for 308 wRC+. In the month of May, Happ is batting .267/.441/.667 and has been worth 180 wRC+, and has now surpassed Javier Baez in fWAR. His strikeout rate...

Chicago Cubs: Javier Baez snaps cold streak with big game in Cincinnati

Barely cracking the Mendoza Line in the last two weeks, Chicago Cubs infielder Javier Baez broke out on both sides of the ball on Sunday afternoon. After an absolutely torrid start out of the gates, Javier Baez seemed to be on cruise control lately. He even drew the ire of Chicago Cubs manager Joe Maddon […] Chicago Cubs: Javier Baez snaps cold streak with big game in Cincinnati - Cubbies Crib - Cubbies Crib - A Chicago Cubs Fan Site - News, Blogs, Opinion and More

... but scored only once, and that helped lead to this loss. Carl Edwards Jr. had a rough outing Wednesday night and was tagged with the defeat in the Cubs’ 4-1 loss to the Braves. But I am not going to blame him, no sirree. Instead I am going to blame the Cubs’ almost complete inability to take advantage of having the leadoff hitter on base. Chicago Cubs: Get to know Albert Alzolay

He may not be Kris Bryant or Javier Baez, but Albert Alzolay has the potential to be the Cubs’ next big star to make his way through the Chicago Cubs farm system.  Chicago Cubs‘ Albert Alzolay is their top prospect according to MLB.com, but who is this guy–and where did he come from? Alzolay is a 23-year-old righted […] Chicago Cubs: Get to know Albert Alzolay - Cubbies Crib - Cubbies Crib - A Chicago Cubs Fan Site - News, Blogs, Opinion and More

Cub Tracks’ legendary feats

Cub Tracks’ legendary feats

Oh! Atlanta, searching for their spark, Why?, and other bullets Last time at the depot, Cub Tracks got to triple digits, expressing thoughts about how Javier Baez is slicker than whale snot and other bullets, and today the train stops in Atlanta for the first of a three-game set, following a Cubs home loss at the hands and bats of the overachieving Braves. That was one that got away, for many reasons, which were explained by Al in his recap. It’s always a good day to honor No. 42. pic.twitter.com/VN1grXYEax— Chicago Cubs (@Cubs) May 14, 2018 I’m not going to praise or bury Jose...

Willson Contreras’ prodigious feats were well-represented in the text, as they should have been, for he had a day for the ages. Willson Contreras is now hitting .281/.352/.516 (.868 OPS). He woke up Wednesday morning with a .230/.315/.354 line (.669 OPS).— Tony Andracki...

2018 Cubs Heroes and Goats: Game 32

2018 Cubs Heroes and Goats: Game 32

Cubs bats maul Marlins 14-2 You’ll pardon me if I don’t run a victory lap over last night’s game. First of all, I view the game as merely taking care of business. Yes, it certainly beats the baseball we saw in the first week of the season when the Cubs last played teams that are currently sub .500. But still, your mileage may vary, but I just don’t get the same joy out of pounding a bad team. Secondly, a potential injury to Javier Baez is upsetting. Of course the run he is on is bound to end, but seriously if a Cub was going to lead the major leagues in RBI at any point in time,...

Cardinals 8, Cubs 6: The home runs give, and the home runs take away

Cardinals 8, Cubs 6: The home runs give, and the home runs take away

A pair of late-inning homers gave the Cubs the lead, but they could not keep it. This one started out well. And then pitching and defense deserted the Chicago Cubs. And then... Javier Baez and Anthony Rizzo sent baseballs out of Busch Stadium in front of their largest crowd of the year so far to give the Cubs a two-run lead, and those appeared to be the difference in this game. And then... Brandon Morrow came on in the ninth inning for the save, but this was not his day. A walk and a single put runners on first and second with one out and Marcell Ozuna doubled them both in to tie the game...

Cubs song parody: ‘Javy Be Good’

Cubs song parody: ‘Javy Be Good’

BCB’s Danny Rockett wrote new lyrics to an old classic for Javier Baez. Next Thursday, May 10, Javier Baez will be appearing at Club 400 to raise money for United For Puerto Rico and hurricane relief efforts. I’ll be performing a few of my Cubs songs at the event and felt compelled to celebrate the most exciting player in baseball fittingly known as “El Mago” in song. This song parody and music video of Chuck Berry’s “Johnny B. Goode” was produced with the highlight editing skills of Corey Freedman of Cubs Insider and the Cubs Related podcast, and we hope you enjoy listening...

April’s Cubs player to watch: Kyle Schwarber

April’s Cubs player to watch: Kyle Schwarber

The Cubs slugger has turned it around in 2018. April was a wild month of baseball for the Chicago Cubs. The vaunted starting pitching staff struggled before it dazzled. Javier Baez is on a torrid pace at the plate. If it continues, he’s a viable MVP candidate. Albert Almora Jr. is routinely putting on a clinic with his defense in center field. The Cubs’ bullpen is exactly as good as I anticipated over the off season as each arm was signed. There have been a few pieces written on all of the above, both here at Bleed Cubbie Blue and elsewhere. Today, however, I wanted to try something a...

Cubs 3, Rockies 2: Hello, first place

Cubs 3, Rockies 2: Hello, first place

The Cubs won their fifth in a row and moved into the top spot in the N.L. Central. What a strange little game, the Cubs’ 3-2 win over the Rockies that put them in first place alone for the first time in 2018. Javier Baez’s usually sparkling defense wasn’t. The Cubs got only four baserunners past first base, but three of them scored. And the Rockies took the lead in the fifth and might have scored more, if not for an “assist” from a gameday employee stationed down the left field line whose job is to retrieve foul balls. I’ll get back to that in a bit. Jon Lester began this game...

Chicago Cubs: Lookout Bryzzo, here comes Balmorez

Chicago Cubs dinger-partnership “Bryzzo” has been silent in April. However, virtuoso Javier Baez and slugger Albert Almora are picking up the slack. Chicago Cubs second baseman Javier Baez and center fielder Albert Almora have brought real firepower to the top of the Cubs lineup. Reminiscent of the “Bryzzo” combination of recent years, perhaps we are seeing the […] Chicago Cubs: Lookout Bryzzo, here comes Balmorez - Cubbies Crib - Cubbies Crib - A Chicago Cubs Fan Site - News, Blogs, Opinion and More

Chicago Cubs vs. Colorado Rockies preview, Monday 4/30, 6:05 CT

The Cubs look for their fifth straight win. Notes for an early Monday evening start: Javier Baez needs three RBI tonight to set a Cubs team record for RBI prior to the end of April. Current mark: 28, set by Derrek Lee in 2005. Lee played in 23 games in April 2005 and had 102 PA. Baez has played in 25 games and has 104 PA going into tonight. The Cubs have a chance tonight to reach 16 wins prior to May 1 for just the fourth time in franchise history. The Cubs entered May with 17 wins in 2008 and 2016 and with 16 wins in 1969. In 2008 they played 27 games prior to May 1, in 2016 22 games and...
