Rumor Central: Giants discussing J.D. Martinez in free agency?

Giants discuss free-agent slugger J.D. Martinez

ORLANDO - Say this for the Giants. If a player with any degree of value is available, they’ll have interest. With an abundance of roster openings, they aren’t quick to rule anybody out. In other words, it’s not all about Giancarlo Stanton. It can be anyone from Eduardo Nuñez, who played in San Francisco before his July trade to Boston, to J.D. Martinez, who actually had a better home run ratio than Stanton. Two industry sources said the Giants have had discussions on Martinez, the most potent hitter on the free-agent market whose...

J.D. Martinez reportedly wants $210 million deal as free agent

J.D. Martinez reportedly wants $210 million deal as free agent

Martinez finished 2017 with 45 home runs while playing for Detroit and Arizona. J.D. Martinez is swinging for the fences in free agency, too. The former Detroit Tigers outfielder has Scott Boras as his agent now, and that means hefty demands from the guy who finished with a career-high 45 home runs last season. How much? Try $30 million per season, according to USA Today's Bob Nightengale. The J.D. Martinez asking price to teams at GM Meetings:Seven years, $210 million— Bob Nightengale (@BNightengale) November 15, 2017 The Tigers traded Martinez to the...

J.D. Martinez won’t be re-signing with the Tigers

J.D. Martinez won’t be re-signing with the Tigers

Sorry to kill your dreams, kids. If there is one name that bargain hunting general managers get a chill upon hearing, it is that of super-agent Scott Boras. Boras was the mastermind behind the mega deal that took Max Scherzer to the Washington Nationals on a seven-year, $210 million dollar deal. He represents a who’s who of the MLB elite, from Bryce Harper and Kris Bryant to big offseason targets like Jake Arrieta and Eric Hosmer. And, as of November 2017, he now represents former Tiger J.D. Martinez. According to ESPN’s Jerry Crasnick, the early whispers are that Martinez will be...

ESPN: Free-Agent J.D. Martinez Will End Up With Red Sox

ESPN: Free-Agent J.D. Martinez Will End Up With Red Sox

A survey of ESPN "insiders" (whatever that means) shows that the Red Sox are the overwhelming choice to sign free-agent J.D. Martinez to a long-term deal. Clearly, Dave Dombrowski needs to beef-up the power quotient in the Boston line-up and Martinez may be the most efficient way to do that—without giving up big league and/or prospect talent. Despite UberAgent Scott Boras seeking a $200 million pact for who he terms the "King Kong Of Slug", most observers think Martinez will land a contract of six years for about $140 million (or a little over $23 million per year). Stay tuned, as the...

Uh-Oh—Free Agent J.D. Martinez Is Now A Boras Client

Uh-Oh—Free Agent J.D. Martinez Is Now A Boras Client

()According to WEEI.com's Rob Bradford, highly sought-after free-agent J.D. Martinez (rumored to be high on the radar of the Red Sox) is now affiliated with notoriously difficult uber-agent Scott Boras. Clearly, this does not bode well for Martinez landing in Boston—since Boras will undoubtedly ask for a king's ransom. The 30-year-old Martinez hit .303 in 2017 for the Detroit Tigers and Arizona Diamondbacks—clouting 45 HRs and knocking in 104. He slugged an astounding .690 on the year and posted an OPS of 1.066.
