Where have you gone, Andy Van Slyke? For the second time in one turn of their rotation, the Pirates are going to put a starting pitcher on the mound with absolutely no big league experience. Brandon Cumpton makes his big league debut today out of necessity more than anything; with AJ Burnett and Wandy Rodriguez and Jeanmar Gomez and Kyle McPherson and Phil Irwin on the disabled list and James McDonald struggling during his rehab outing, someone has to be the Pirates fifth starter. So who is Brandon Cumpton? He was the Pirates tenth round pick in 2010 out of Georgia Tech, so he's not one of the high school pitching prospects ...
Pittsburgh Pirates June 15, 2013Where have you gone, Andy Van Slyke? Last night's matchup of Rick Porcello and Jeanmar Gomez seemed to have all of the markings of a home run derby before it turned into the best pitcher's duel of the year. Tonight? Anibal Sanchez and AJ Burnett have spent the whole season striking out guys like crazy. They'd betainly be two pitchers you'd think would be capable of the game that we saw last night. We'll see how things turn out. This weird series has shifted back to PNC Park tonight, which means that the game will be started at 7:05 and not 7:08. For whatever reason.
Pittsburgh Pirates May 29, 2013CBSSports.com Fantasy Pirates starting pitcher Jeanmar Gomez enjoyed another solid outing but was not backed by the proper run support as he did not factor in the decision Tuesday night against the Tigers.Gomez pitched seven scoreless innings and allowed just three hits and one walk while striking out two before handing the game to the bullpen.Gomez has allowed five earned runs over his last 28 1/3 innings. May 29, 2013Where have you gone, Andy Van Slyke? Despite my pre-game predictions of doom for both pitchers, Jeanmar Gomez and Rick Porcello both came out dealing after tonight's rain delay. Porcello absolutely dominated the Pirates in his eight innings, holding the Bucs to three hits and a walk while striking out 11 batters (quite a feat for him), getting nine groundouts to go with just two flyouts, and only needing 99 pitches on top of it all. He was the Ideal Realization of Everything Rick Porcello Can Be tonight, and there just wasn't much the Pirates could do about it. Jeanmar Gomez, meanwhile, was just the same inexplicably successful...
Pittsburgh Pirates May 28, 2013Detroit News On a rainy Tuesday night at Comerica Park, Rick Porcello, with his 6.28 ERA, and Pirates right-hander Jeanmar Gomez, a pitcher the Tigers used to routinely tag when he pitched for Cleveland, locked up in a scoreless battle through eight innings

May 17, 2013CBSSports.com Fantasy Pirates starting pitcher Jeanmar Gomez is set to take the mound Friday against the Astros, and he calf tightness that plagued him in his previous start is not an issue, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. Gomez has started three games in a row since moving into the rotation, and has allowed just three earned runs on eight hits in 14 innings of work. He has not gone more than five inning in any start, and the team seems OK with that out of him for now. May 17, 2013Where have you gone, Andy Van Slyke? I guess the Pirates owed the universe one after Jonathan Sanchez beat Kris Medlen and Jeanmar Gomez beat Matt Harvey. Marco Estrada's biggest problem this year has been giving up home runs. The Pirates didn't hit any tonight. Gah. The Pirates being unable to beat the Brewers is the most annoying thing in sports.
