Bench: Jeff Mathis-C, Miguel Olivo-C, Jordan Brown-1B/OF, Nick Green-INF, Chris Coghlan-OF. I ... I don't know how to start this one. I had a dream last night about baseball. I don't dream very often, so this struck me as rare, especially because when I do dream it usually involves people from my life. Not this one though. No, this one involved the concept of making baseball players dress up in mascot versions of themselves to pl...

Miami Marlins rookie Jose Fernandez draws King Felix comparison

Fish Tank | Palm Beach Post — Catcher Jeff Mathis makes his Marlins debut tonight and he will catch rookie Jose Fernandez. Fernandez faces the Reds for the second time this year — and the first time since they five runs in four innings against him April 18 in an 11-1 loss in Cincinnati. If Fernandez pounds the strike zone tonight like he did in his last start in Los Angeles, he should do just fine. A day after Fernandez beat the Dodgers with six strong innings on Friday, manager Don Mattingly compared Fernandez to Seattle ace Felix Hernandez. “He reminded me of King Felix. Same body. Kind of the wide lower half. That tur...

Marlins catcher Jeff Mathis activated from the disabled list

Fish Tank | Palm Beach Post — Here’s today’s Marlins report from Palm Beach Post staff writer Jorge Milian, who is filling in for me today and Tuesday at Marlins Park: As expected, the Marlins activated Jeff Mathis from the 15-day disabled list on Tuesday and will go with three catchers on the roster. Mathis, acquired from Toronto during the offseason, broke his right collarbone in the Marlins’ opening exhibition game on Feb. 23. “He’s a proven catcher in the big leagues,” manager Mike Redmond said of the 30-year-old Mathis. “He would have been back there catching a lot to this point had he not gotten hurt. This is a st...

Will Marlins carry three catchers once Jeff Mathis returns?

Fish Tank | Palm Beach Post — The Marlins have decisions looming as their injured players start returning from the disabled list. First up appears to be catcher Jeff Mathis, who is on track to join the Marlins on Tuesday in Miami after being out since Feb. 23 with a broken collarbone. If that happens, one option has Miguel Olivo being designated for assignment or released. Another option is to send struggling catcher Rob Brantly to Class AAA New Orleans, which would give the Marlins two experienced catchers on the big league team. But there are some in the organization who prefer Brantly to stay at the major league leve...
