Guthrie makes most of final tuneup, leads Royals past Padres

PEORIA, Ariz. -- Jeremy Guthrie pitched six strong innings in his final tuneup before sliding into the No. 5 spot in Kansas City's rotation, and the Royals beat the San Diego Padres 4-1 Tuesday night. Guthrie, who turns 36 next week, allowed one run and six hits while striking out five. The 13-game winner from a year ago threw 93 pitches. Brandon Morrow, front-runner for the Padres' final rotation spot, gave up three runs and seven hits before leaving with one out in the fifth. read more

Guthrie strong as Royals top Mariners, 3-0

PEORIA, Ariz. — Kansas City starter Jeremy Guthrie shut out the Mariners on two hits for 52/3 innings and picked up his first win of the spring, delivering the Royals a 3-0 on Thursday. “It was good,” Guthrie. “Able to throw all my pitches for strikes and felt healthy and strong. Kept it down for the most part.” Closer Greg Holland relived and finished the sixth with a strikeout. Ryan Jackson hit a two-run single with two outs in the eighth off reliever Danny Farquhar, who is in contention for a Seattle bullpen job. read more
