The Rays Tank: Over-Dependence on Changeups Creates Chaos

DRaysBay — On Saturday, Alex Cobb delivered one of the most bizarre performances anyone had ever seen, striking out 13 but lasting just 4.2 innings. By that standard, Jeremy Hellickson's outing was pretty ordinary as he struck out 8 while walking just 1 in 6.2 innings yet allowed 6 runs. But both Cobb and Hellickson had a big similarity between their performances: an extreme over-reliance on their changeups. According to Brooks Baseball, Cobb threw more split-changes than fastballs among his 117 pitches, 50 against just 43. He had an unhittable changeup, which is why he threw so many of them, and...

Hellickson allowed just two runs through the first six innings -- both on a homer by Chase Headley in the first -- before being tagged for five in the seventh, with the heavy damage coming on a grand slam by pinch-hitter Jesus Guzman. The poor frame prevented him from completing seven innings for the first time in his past four starts as his ERA swelled to 5.25. The right-hander struck out...

Searching For The Cause Of Price's Struggles

DRaysBay — This has been an extremely frustrating season for Rays' fans. With the team's mediocre play, there are plenty of culprits deserving a share of the blame. Yunel Escobar is hitting for a mere 43 wRC+, Jeremy Hellickson lost his command, and the bullpen is an absolute train wreck. However, the biggest disappointment has to be David Price, who has degenerated from a Cy Young winner to a replacement level type pitcher. Why has Price been so bad? To find out why David Price is doing poorly, we must first establish what aspects of pitching he is struggling with. Unfortunately, this is not as ...

Jeremy Hellickson is worth your time

CBSSports.com Fantasy — After a pair of seasons in which he outperformed his peripherals, the scales have tipped the other way for Rays starter Jeremy Hellickson. It could happen as soon as this week, as Hellickson has two starts on the way. Rays pitchers, umpires fined for actions
