Latest news and rumors on Jesus Montero Throws No-Hitter updated May 17, 2013
Mariners Blog | Seattle Times Much of Eric Wedge's pre-game session today was devoted to talking about the progress of Jesus Montero (and he said that Montero is definitely making some). Then Montero went out and won the Mariners a big ballgame with a huge home run in the seventh off A.J. Burnett. That broke a 1-1 tie and gave Felix Hernandez the win in a game that looked like it was headed to a familiar result: Hernandez pitches his heart out, Mariners don't score for him, and he gets a no-decision or even a loss. But after Hernandez's home run, Hernandez blanked the Pirates in the seventh and eighth before Tom Wilhelmsen...

Burnett. He has just four hits in 27 at-bats, but he's made them count: a double, homer and seven RBIs. The highlight, of course, was a grand slam off Johan Santana onJune 23, 2008 at Shea Stadium. He had a two-run double at San Diego last June.

Mariner OK, besides “really slow?” Jeff wrote a good post about Jesus Montero wherein he contrasted his Baseball America prospect rankings and Miguel Cabrera comparisons with the cold, sterile fact of his Mariner performance. Seattle Mariners May 3, 2013CBSSports.com Fantasy Orioles outfielder Adam Jones misplayed a deep fly ball hit by Mariners catcher Jesus Montero in the second inning Wednesday. Jones chased down the fly ball, but he let is drop off his glove and crashed into the wall, which allowed Montero to scoot to third base. "I missed the ball," Jones said, per MLB.com. "Doesn't really matter if you misjudge it, you missed it. So, you make an excuse no one wants to listen to it. I missed it and cost my team. That inning turned out to be a pretty big inning." The Gold Glove outfielder's defense has come under fire recently, despite having committed just on...
May 2, 2013CBSSports.com Fantasy Mariners catcher Jesus Montero went deep Saturday during a 3-2 win over the Angels. Montero took Joe Blanton out to left field for a two-run shot in the sixth inning for his second home run of the season. Montero finished 2 for 4 in the game and added a single. He's batting .228. However, over his last seven games Montero has gone 9 for 27 (.333) with two homers and six RBI.
April 29, 2013Mariners Blog | Seattle Times There was a time when it looked as if the Mariners might never score again, but Jesus Montero tied it up in the sixth with a two run homer and then Kendrys Morales had the pinch-hit single in the seventh for a 3-2 win by the Mariners. After those 13 runners were stranded last night, it was deja vu time in this one until Montero's hit. The Mariners kept piling up baserunners with nothing to show for it until Montero delivered the big blow of the game. And that now assures the Mariners of at least a split of this four-game series. Things got a bit dicey in the ninth when Tom Wilhelmsen came on...
Seattle Mariners April 27, 2013Mariners Blog | Seattle Times The Angels scored twice in the third to take the lead starting with a solo homer to left-center by Chris Iannetta. Peter Bourjos then singled, stole second and took third when a weak throw by catcher Jesus Montero tailed off and went into center field. A sac fly to right by Mike Trout produced the second, unearned run. They almost got another run in the fourth, when, with runners at the corners and one out, Brendan Harris tried a squeeze bunt with Mark Trumbo sprinting home from third. But Felix Hernandez fielded it and flipped to Montero, who blocked t...

April 27, 2013CBSSports.com Fantasy It would be an overreaction to drop Jesus Montero this early in the season, but he has rightfully earned a bench spot in many of his Fantasy leagues. It's not just his poor start that should have owners worried; Montero has yet to show much power in his 149 games with the Mariners, going back to last year. Safeco Field seemed to have a depressing effect on Montero's power in 2012, as only six of his homers came at his home park. So far this season, Montero has been hitting flyballs at a much higher rate (43 percent, as opposed to 34 percent in 2012), but all his 19 flies have produced are one ...
April 25, 2013CBSSports.com Fantasy Mariners catcher Jesus Montero finally hit his first home run Monday night in Houston. He went deep in the fourth inning for a two-run shot off starter Brad Peacock. Montero added a sacrifice fly and finished 1 for 3 with three RBI. He's batting .224 for Seattle. It took the powerful 23-year-old 13 games to hit his first homer, but he's starting to hit more consistently. Montero has hits in five straight games to raise his average from .133 on April 10.
April 23, 2013CBSSports.com Fantasy Astros starting pitcher Brad Peacock struggled again on Monday night at home against the Mariners. Peacock saw his ERA rise to 7.50 after taking the loss. Peacock (1-2) gave up a run in the first inning and then two runs apiece in each of the third, fourth and fifth frames to allow seven total on nine hits and a walk over just 4 1/3 innings. He struck out just one batter and was taken deep three times. Kendrys Morales, Jesus Montero and Kyle Seager all homered off Peacock. Montero and Seager's were two-run blasts. The 25-year-old has now failed to finish five frames in three of his four starts...
April 23, 2013CBSSports.com Fantasy The entire Jesus Montero situation is very weird. He's on the wrong side of a timeshare with Kelly Shoppach, but has managed a .375 average in his last four games, all coming with a gap of one or two days in between. Usually when a player is taken out of regular playing time, he sees his numbers dip, as loses his rhythm; Montero has done the opposite. Meanwhile, Justin Smoak, who has an average about 30 points lower than Montero, isn't losing at-bats at first base (a position Montero has been almost-playing for three years). Montero hit .260 with 15 home runs in 515 at-bats last year. He stink...
April 22, 2013CBSSports.com Fantasy After a slow start to the season, Mariners catcher Jesus Montero has six hits over his last four games. Despite his improvements, Montero hasn't been in the team's lineup much lately. Montero started the season with consistent playing time, but has been on the bench more often recently. Since April 11, Montero has split time with Kelly Shoppach, with the majority of the playing time going to Shoppach. While Montero has hit in his last few games, Shoppach has made the most of his limited opportunites. That doesn't seem likely to last, but Montero hasn't helped himself with his lack of power to ...
April 22, 2013Texas Rangers Blog | ESPN Dallas ARLINGTON, Texas -- Rangers rookie right-hander Nick Tepesch had good range of motion in his pitching arm Sunday morning and still expects to make his next start Thursday at Minnesota. Tepesch was hit in the right wrist by a line drive off the bat of Seattle's Jesus Montero with two outs in the second inning. The ball scraped off of his elbow and left a visible cut. But fortunately it didn't catch him flush and x-rays were negative. Tepesch was scheduled to be re-evaluated by Dr.
